Tale of a Cursed Action.

Was gonna suggest you get a CBI barrel, but I checked and it doesn't look like they offer a 6.5 wsm. Too bad, I have a 6.5x47 that I put on my Savage action that shoots well. Find a good Savage prefit maker that does produce a 6.5 wsm and spin it on yourself. I would also suggest getting the firing pin bushed as well.

If you decide you just don't trust/want the action let me know.
Right, no 6.5wsm however,
I have a 6BR, 7RM and 6.5-284 CBI barrels. Maybe I'll call James at Northland and see if he can hook me up.

Their barrels are very accurate and seem to outlast most other barrels.

You never answered my question. You don’t have to, but I asked it in earnest and unrhetorically.

I have a savage small shank 6.5 wsm I'd sell. It's either a shilen or x caliber, will have to ck. My be unfired, I bought to put on a long action build and can't remember. I'll look up the info if you're interested.

The answer is yes. However my requirements for a target barrel is .3 moa consistently from a front rest and rear bag, hunting barrels, .5 moa consistently from a hunting bag or prone. I never shoot less than 200 yards. If I can't realize this the barrel is replaced.

This means my skill level must permit these results.

Roger that. This being the internet, guys on forums exert themselves to solve problems, but sometimes (often) it’s not a problem with equipment.

Well, it’s always been an odd thing to me, the amount of time we all spend talking about equipment and ballistics and loads, while very few people ever want to talk about the mechanics of positions, trigger control, psychology, fitness, drilling, etc.

Not only do they (mostly men) not want to talk about it, they sure as HELL don’t want to be told they are doing something less perfectly than they imagine.

I checked, it's an x-caliber

I have read more than once and been told that many things other than the barrel can make a gun not shoot. If you have access to a competent gunsmith, why not let him diagnose and fix the gun or identify the problem before buying another barrel?

That’s the advice that has been given to you by some people that know what they are doing. Probably the best advice that you have or will receive; plus it’s free.

If you don’t have access to a good smith, maybe one of the guys on here will help you out.

I've seen an off center firing pin hole cause accuracy issues. I'm not saying that's the problem but there are things in an action that can cause accuracy issues. The scope mounting or scope itself are common problem areas too.

I would go over everything carefully and check your primers to make sure they are getting struck in the center with a good primer strike.

Make sure your barrel is free floating, maybe consider bedding the action.

Also, how fast do you shoot? A lot of Savage barrels are hunting profiles and won't group well for a long string of fire without cooling.

Also, why 6.5WSM?

I think 6.5 Creedmoor and 6.5x47 have better reputation for accuracy, probably 6.5x284 too but it's not known for great barrel accuracy life. I know that's not everything to take in to account but I'm not sure what you are after.

No such thing. You have good machining and smithing and not so good. You have quality materials and parts and you have junk. You need a machinist or 'smith that is known for precision rifle work to look at it and fix it.

Just for clarification. Are you talking guns or sex here? :)

I used to hang around Kenny Jarretts shop years ago when he actually did the work himself. He had a 700 action that would not shoot no matter what. He tried different barrels, checked measurements, re stocked it, everything you could imagine. He lost it one day and took it to the band saw and cut it in half.

I have PTG bolt head, the firing pin is dead centered.

All my hunting barrels get shot as close to ambient temp as possible (cold bore shots).

This is my second 6.5wsm build. The other is extremely accurate, the first bullet and powder combination tried got <.5 moa 5 shot groups at 200 yards. It is also a Savage but has a Pac Nor barrel.
I got some good references from this site for MGM/ Preferred barrels so I thought I'd give them a try on this build.

Well if your other barrel is a shooter and also Savage thread, swap it out and see if it is the action or the barrels that were cursed.
