Got some 6.5wsm questions

Could I use 270wsm Redding bushing dies to reload a 6.5wsm by just bushing it down. Second I know there are not ballistically the same but shouldn't a 6.5 140gr bullet in a wsm case velocity be relatively the same a 140gr .277 bullet fired out of the same case. Asking this becuase I have a 270wsm but the a 6.5wsm build keep rearing it's nasty head everytime I think about what I want to build. I don't think the barrel wear should be much more than that of the 270wsm... Help me out guys

summitsitter, I have a buddy who built a 6.5/270wsm for Canadian F Class. He had Pacific grind a reamer on his own spec. I will contact him and see if he wants to answer your question.

Take a look at some of the velocitys the guys shooting the 30BR are getting with heavier bullets than the 6mm guys
are getting with the 6mm 105's.As bore diameter goes up
you gain an advantage because the powder has a larger surface to push against. The smaller bullets will have a better
b.c. for their weight.I like my 6.5WSM very much but I do think next barrel will be a .270 or 7mm mostly for better barrel life though.

17VLD I understand your concept but that's .036" (30 to 6.5)verses .013"(270-6.5) Don't see that really coming into play in the latter. What kinda barrel life you getting and what loads you running? Thanks, trent

Summitsitter,So far I've fired 300 rounds through this rifle
I'm hoping to get to 1000rds before I change the barrel.
I use colloidal graphite in the barrel and I coat the Sierra 142MK's with SPL.My load is the Fed 210M/142MK/66.0 N-170
for a little over 3200fps.Thinking about Retumbo in the future.
By all means you should build a 6.5WSM if you want to.
I've shot a 900+ yd prairie dog with this rifle in an attempt to get in the 1000yd club,my rifle is very consistant and can sure do it,not sure my optics/vision will though.Love the rifle and need to get out and try again.

I used Redding type S FL dies for my 6.5 WSM the accuracy was great until 500-600 and then barrel was suffering.

Yes. You can ues the 270 WSM bushing neck die with the proper bushing to neck down the 270 to 6.5. Its done regularly.

I'm shooting a 6.5x300wsm. How many rounds are you getting out of your brass? Are you annealing?

I use a .296 bushing with my Norma .270 WSM without neck turning in my 6,5 WSM. I use the same die with .308 Bushing for my Winchester .270 WSM brass in a .270 WSM. I use a Wilson seater that was reamed with my chamber reamer.

I use a .270 WSM Type "S" Redding Full Length Bushing die all the time now. I use .270 WSM brass from Norma. The .296 Bushing employed. I have not turned necks. My chamber is .297 on my reamer at the mouth.

I use a Wilson seating die that was reamed with my reamer by the riflesmith (Mike Palazzo in Covington WA) when the barrel was chambered.

I use the Lee sliding sleeve seating die for 85 gr Sierra HPs that are shot as a low recoil fun load. I keep that die adjusted for these short shank bullets. I use Accurate 5744 and CCI 250 magnum primers. 2.2 grams is a reasonable load but experiment.

I use HBN on my bullets. I use the 130 ABs with the current barrel. I have tried and rejected 130 Scirrocos. The 120gr Ballistic Tips go just as fast out of my 6.5/284. I have a new single shot chambered for this cartridge and will be using the 140 gr bullets. What have you learned about these bullets? What are the bullets you have tried? What powders have you tried. What is to avoid?
