O.K. Pointy Heads! Remington 783 Extractor issue.

Just a word of caution on swapping bolt heads -- be sure to check headspace. Bolt heads are not held to tight tolerances on economy rifles.

Did you check cartridge protrusion from barrel before installing ? Do you have both go and no go gauges ?f
Take a magic marker and blacken the extractor groove and above , place in bolt and hold against face , spin slowly, see where the extractor is riding . It's just an aprx location but mark it again and this time chamber , close bolt , pull trigger ( NO PRIMER ! NO POWDER ! NO BULLET ) open and see first if ball is still where it's supposed to be and second where the extractor is hitting when chambered and pulled out .

Yes I have both gauges.

Thanks for the above info. I will do this check and update.

Yes My experiment bears this out.

It was not an issue on firing the loaded rounds for the Raptor. All chambered easily.

However today when I started the break-in process on the 6.5-06, I had not swapped the bolt heads back around and the 10 rounds I shot were a definite crush fit into the chamber. All cycled perfectly with no Extractor issues.
When I initially sized the cases and verified chambering before loading I had them adjusted my sizing dies to the point where it was only a very light, light push to close the bolt.

Thanks for answering another item that

The load was 45.0 brains of Reloder 19 and I averaged 2602 for the 10 shots. I did not get a chance to fire the second 10 rounds. I did as stated earlier swap the bolt heads back around while cleaning after the 1oth shot.

I was just reading about the Savage upgrade kits.

It is said that a weak ejector spring can cause a lot of extraction problems.

They also do a bigger ball bearing.

My understanding from reading is if the ejector isn't pressing the rim in to the extractor hook strongly enough, it can let go of the case.

Maybe look in to that.
