Rope for pulling targets at Ben Avery

At the SWN earlier this year, I saw several (most?) shooters using ropes, tied to the frames, to pull the targets.
How long should the ropes be for this purpose?

8' to double and hang from frame.
12-14' if you prefer to have the rope clipped to your belt

A double braid 5/8" dock line works well. Usually a 5/8" will be about 20-25' if a pre-made line is bought. The larger diameter and double braid is very soft and non-chaffing to ungloved hands. It is much cheaper to find a dealer of bulk lines and have one cut to 8-10'. Quality double-braid isn't cheap but worth it IMO.

3/8" Nylon Dock rope works well. You can get a 10' length on Amazon for $10.84. It holds up well and doesn't chafe your hands. I've found the 10' to be perfect length, when doubled over the rail and I tie the ends into a knot.

Alex, you can buy large diameter soft braided rope by the foot at Home Depot. That's where mine came from anyway.

I bought 7 feet of 1” nylon three-twist dock rope when I shot the 2004 OBR.

Shooter I met at Camp Perry several years later taught me how to braid-splice the ends, eliminating the knot I’d always found awkward.

I forgot to take it off a carrier on Viale one year, it spent the winter there. Upon returning a year later it was still there....

Serves me well to this day.

It helps those of us with bad backs or disabilities to get the targets back up quickly, and limits the need to bend to lift the carriage (Target). In our 50 BMG Matches, we spot, every shot, and the faster I can get the target back up, for my shooter, the better chance he/she has being able to stay with their wind condition. YMMV

That works, sometimes. Other times the target can come loose in your hand.

Using a rope ‘handle’ gives you leverage your arm and hand alone don’t provide. With a rope you can be lifting your target while reaching for the X/10 spot with the scoring disk after marking last shot & pasting the hole, all while staying centered on your feet & not straining anything.

‘Specially valuable when you’re scoring for a shooter’s whose not helping you much with high 8’s or worse.

10’s & X’s deserve your best performance but you should give best to everyone while not hurting yourself.

That F-Class 7 second ET delay is there for a reason....

Even though I have to 'watch' my back due to herniated & ruptured disks, I really had no problem this past February.
Still, I believe the rope will make it easier, and less likely to result in a painful episode.

I will buy one at Home Depot.

Alex, as someone mentioned earlier, you can get a really soft rope from a horse lead from Tractor Supply. I like to have it doubled in my hand, really works well.

Don't get anything under 7/8". Your hands will thank you....especially at Raton with their notoriously sticky target carriers. Horse lead rope is perfect.

And as an added bonus, I'll advise you on proper technique, if you like. Your call. I can regularly trip the target from impact to back in battery in under 7 seconds at Ben Avery with my trusty rope.

• Bought a nice, soft, heavy, double braid rope yesterday at Rural King
So I am all set!

All I have left to do are the incidentals; such as testing a new lot of powder with bullets also from a new lot, reloading, making a list of what to take to avoid remembering what I forgot when I get there, etc.
