6mm remington question

is the 6mm Remington just the 7x57 necked down to 6mm? if so I have plenty of cases to run thru 6mm dies and thus a new savage build will be in the works!!

The 6mm Remington was based on the 7x57.

If you look at a couple of dimensions there are a couple that are off a couple or few thousandths but off hand I don't know why you couldn't neck a 7x57 down and have it work with no real issues. Do a couple of cases and check the fit in your chamber before you do a bunch of them.

Shot a 6 Remington quite a bit for a long range gun. Always worked good for me. Still have brass and dies but currently no gun chambered in the round.

I formed my 6AI brass from Norma 7× 57 Mauser brass. Worked perfectly... had 7 firings before retiring the barrel. They might have 3 or 4 more firings left.

cool thanks for all the info... I will put a 6mm Remington build together using a 9twist barrel unless someone has a different idea....and I am thinking a 26" tube as well.. and I will base it off a savage action so I can put it together myself after the barrel is all chambered and threaded.. its a good thing savage builds are not to expensive.

Why not go 6AI 8 twist since you still are practically fireforming anyway.
Get a Redding 6AI body die and a Lee Collet neck die and you'll have essentially zero run out...almost perfectly straight ammo.

I plan to get a Redding 6mm AI body die. My Lee 6mm Rem Collet (neck) die works just fine with 6mm AI brass. Looking back at the FN build, I kind of wish I did a 6mm AI. Lots of excitement with 87 Vmax's at mid 3500 fps speeds - zippy flat trajectories and great splat effect on 400 yard plus rodents. I use Redding body dies with Lee Collet dies for 3 other calibers and am very pleased with that combo.

I was thinking 100gr might be tops when it comes to bullet weight... what do you think? I plan on this rifle build to be my main huntin rifle,, varmint and deer...so I just got off of Load Data . Com and looked at various loads for the 100gr pill and 3100fps is easy doable so that even makes it a good antelope gun too..be hellish on wild hogs at 100 yards too. that 100gr is so ambidextrous

I use my Rem. model 700, chambered in 6mm Rem for hunting feral hogs. I have killed almost 200 of them in the last 3 years. It is my favorite rifle for hunting. It is a 9 twist and loves the 100 gr. Nosler Partition bullet.
Build it and you will love it!

I played with this, but did it in two steps: 7x57 -> 257 Roberts -> 6mm Rem using two FL dies. I feel this stresses the case much less.

Be aware that neck wall thickness increased by 0.002" just going down to 257, and another thou or so getting to 6mm. So I strongly recommend neck turning at 7x57, and perhaps turn them considerably thinner than you otherwise would. Also you need to check case OAL and trim as required. My 7x57s started at 2.226" and at 6mm they had grown to 2.239".

I suggested an 8 twist just in case your barrel doesn't like the particular bullet you have in mind...it's happened to me more than twice!

ok I have been turned to the 8twist barrel... so does that mean I need to down load some of the lighter loads to keep the RPM's a little bit lower? Or just shoot them at speed?

I ran 105 Hybrid targets at 3350 with 6AI.

ALSO, since you are headspaceing your Savage. If you go 6AI, headspace the barrel tight on virgin brass. (about .004" crush fit on virgin brass)
