Dasher beginnings

Thanks for posting this Alex.
I was lucky enough to work at a Ford garage near Al Ashton’s home, noticed his name on a repair order for a Bronco, find him in the waiting room and then go to lunch with him.He is a very nice man,he even gave me a dummy 22 Dasher round to go with my 20 and 6mms.The Dashers story is very cool,I remember meeting Richard at the VHA when his 6mm40X was giving him fits, the rest they say is history:)

Had my first 6Dasher barrel chambered in August 2004. Had been using 243-Ackley's prior to it, and was a little skeptical if it would cut it for long range, but kept reading results Richard Schatz was laying down with his, and just had to give one a try. It blew me away how accurate and consistent it was at 1000yds right out of the gate. Still shooting them today, some 15-years later now.

so two things, as an ex-member of the colorado rifle club(crc) i have met and talked with both al and dan. i started shooting 1k with a self built 300 wm as a lite gun. when i knew i was staying in the game i built a dasher as a lite and moved the 300 to a heavy. nice post

i have a question for all but hope to hear from donovan.
building a new dasher foor 600/1000 yd br, and am wondering if there is an advantage to a 30" bbl over a 28 ?
lite gun, so there is the 17 lb limit, but if i can make it, is there an advantage ??
lrb stock, brmxd drop port, 15-55x nf jewel trigger

I have read that you may loose 15 fps per inch over 28".

I've run 28" and 30" in recent years, and I have never seen lower velocities in a 30" v. a 28". RL-16 and RL-15.5 powder in almost all of the barrels. Velocity increases significantly with RL-16 in a 30" v. a 28".

I find it very interesting that two varmint shooters shooting larger 22 caliber cases,Al the 22-250 and Lou the .220 Swift in an effort to find more efficient cartridges developed our most winning BR cases ever. IIRC Lou was looking in a gun shop after groundhog hunting in Sussex NJ and happened upon the 220 Russian case and then started collaborating with Ferris and the ppc came about and as you have read above the Dasher was devised by Al in search of a better pd round. Kind of puts you in mind of Pope and Donaldson and Landis. Thanks again for sharing this piece of great history Alex it is definitely the perfect time of year for it.

I built my first 22 Dasher back in the day, no doubt inspired by that article.

I found that it was too damn tough on barrels for a prairie dog rifle after the last one being toast in under 1900 rounds. I did built a couple of coyote rifles on the 22 Dasher, & it was a terror on coyotes with 40 grain Ballistic Tips at 4200. The rest of the brass I necked all to 6mm, & made the wholesale switch to the 6 Dasher instead for PD's.

Quite convenient that I also made the switch from the 6.5-284 to the 6 Dasher for 600/1000 yard BR shortly there after. I had a wore out 6PPC barrel chambered to a no turn 6 Dasher with .050" freebore fitted to one of my 700's for PD's. I had originally bought a couple cases of Lapua 6BR brass, and fireformed it all on the PD fields. Any time I needed brass for the BR rifle, I just stole some brass from the PD gun, neck turned, & I was in business.
