At Cabelas Today, Big Pricing Issue.

The Cabela's here has definitely gone downhill. On the positive side you can usually get help faster now because not so many customers in the way but the employee base is disgraceful in their knowledge.

Sounds like consignment to me. Leave it sitting there until the consignor gets a dose of reality.

I had a Cabelas CC for years but now I rarely use it. I used to build up points and purchase bullets and such. Unfortunately their inventory and variety has really declined, even online. I actually buy more gun and hunting related stuff from Amazon! Free shipping with the same or lower prices. If they went out of business tomorrow it would have little to no impact on my purchases.

I have pretty much kicked Cabelas to the curb. Ass Pro has ruined them. I ditched my card and got a better rate at another place/bank. Only go there once in a while, and kick tires. Sportsmans WH or Gallensons if I am in SLC. Otherwise we have a couple of nice LGS's here that know me by name.

Same here. I had a Cabela's card for probably 25 years and closed my account last month - SO many better choices!

I went into a new Bass Pro Shop a few years back outside of Houston. I didn't see any, so I asked the firearms department manager if they had any smokeless powder. He responded "what is smokeless powder?" I kid you not.

Ok here my rant about Cabela's. Absolutely the worst gun store I've never been in - here's why:

1. To examine a firearm you have to take a number - sit around until they call the number then endure a salesman hovering over you to make a decision to buy or pass. Went when there a few years ago to buy a rifle - knew exactly what I wanted and it was on sale. My number was in the 80's, they were servicing a number in the 50's. Departed w/o a purchase - ordered the rifle from a local shop and even though I had a wait a week and the price was a little higher I didn't regret it.

2. Same as above for scopes.

3. Their pricing on components is horrible and many times their inventory is exhausted. Local shop has a significant better inventory of bullets and powder and rarely out of any item they stock.

4. The checkout lines, at least at the Hamburg, PA store is horrendous - especially on weekends. It's a painful shopping experience.

On the positive side, their hunting footwear (Cabela's brand) is good and service is adequate. The food is good too and the animal displays are terrific. It's a great place to visit to have a meal and look around but not for buying gun ware items.

It all fairness I haven't visited them in over 2 years so I don't know if they've improved their service or inventory since Brass Pro Shop took over.
In Cabelas today in Lexington here is what I saw:

I believe you - a few years ago when I did manage to get a "low number to qualify" to examine a rifle I asked the salesman what the twist was since this was Cabela's Special Edition rifle made for them by Sako. His response, "No twist - price is what is shown on the tag."

BWAHAHA! Love it!

Took a first year model 88 with 22 rounds fired thru it in to see what they would give me. $400. Wanted to give me $250 for a Special Field 1100 20 ga. And 600 for a pretty nice M1A. I couldnt keep from laughing out loud at him, especially since a post 64 88 with a bushnell scope and requisite see thru rings, with special "dragged behind the truck with barbed wire" finish was marked $1300 in the display...

I've never gone back.

You expected a skilled professional for $9.50 per hour? Bwahahahahahaha:p

Reading this thread has made me happy. I thought I was the only one to:

-be amazed at what they were asking and offering for used guns.
-dump the BPS card.
-give up on a high gun counter number.
-feel like BPS is ruining Cabela's (more)
-walk into the store already pissed because I know if I buy something I will be waiting in the single check-out line behind 10 other people while they use out-of-date software, and finally have to walk over to customer service and ask them to open another register.
-get questionable help from employees.

I was just there today and have never seen so few people in the store.

I don't make a special trip to the store anymore, but may stop if I am already going that way and I saw something in their ad.

Won't be much of a line if the stores empty.Or maybe in your case their was a lot of hired help.

Been to the Sidney store numerous time over the years, but never recall seeing a line. Always like to scope out their LH rifle offerings, but otherwise never interested in a firearm. Displays are great tho.
