At Cabelas Today, Big Pricing Issue.

I was looking on the "USED" rack at Cabelas today and picked up a 12FV, 6.5 CM priced at $559! And I'm like WTF?

I go over to the gun counter and look at the tag on a new 12FV...$419.00, the normal full price.

Is Creedmore marketing that good that it deserves 33% markup, USED?

Their used pricing is all kinds of screwed up, and it works both ways.

I saw a guy get a Winchester 1906 .22lr for ~$100 a few weeks back; not in the greatest condition, but you could part it out and make double/triple your money. A buddys dad got two broomhandle mausers for like $400 a piece when the Buda location opened.

Conversely, you'll see some $700 SKSs.

No rhyme or reason to it.

I bought a 686 beretta 20ga in texas city cabelas on the used rack. It had $1500 on the tag. I asked the guy if he would take $1000 for it, he checked and said they had it 89 days so they couldnt mark it down yet. I came back the next day and got it for $800. Some poor soul sold that gun to them for less than $800. I suspect trading in a gift from their father for a rpr in creedmoor

the story i got from the 'gun library' manager a while back, when negotiating on a similar yet much less drastic price differential was:

'some of these guns get shipped to us from other stores, perhaps in areas where prices are generally higher, and we get stuck will a cost that is not supported in this market'

so that's their story. at least she took the time to look it up and commiserate. true or not, don't know. and not saying that is the case in your instance.

maybe that particular rifle had won a legendary local golf ball match when used by a local legendary shooter, and came with a sub 1/4 moa guarantee... it is a CM, after all.

its called Creedmooore ego, everything about it gets inflated. pair it with a RPR and Wa-La...super fat ego boosters.

glad there is a forum like this and people like us out there to help try and straighten them out! ;)

I deleted my post that viciously attacked you. You're welcome.

I'm just sick and tired of some people on this forum that have to bash anything they feel is other than what they perceive as something they would own or participate in.

thanks man! i never attacked anybody either.
i don't have hip hop music either, nor do i see any BR matches being dominated by the CM or it wouldn't be getting any bashing at all. From what i see great about it is there are so many factory loaded ammo options it makes a great hunting round. There, now i praised it, match it with a RPR and DANG!!! moderate range killing machine.
your welcome too

How can anyone trust the quality of a used rifle barrel?

I don’t think you can! I’ll only buy an unknown used rifle if it is priced appropriately, which for me means that it’s cheap enough that I won’t be upside down if I replace the barrel.

Ironically the worst two shooting rifles that I’ve purchased were both new in box factory rifles.

Ok here my rant about Cabela's. Absolutely the worst gun store I've never been in - here's why:

1. To examine a firearm you have to take a number - sit around until they call the number then endure a salesman hovering over you to make a decision to buy or pass. Went when there a few years ago to buy a rifle - knew exactly what I wanted and it was on sale. My number was in the 80's, they were servicing a number in the 50's. Departed w/o a purchase - ordered the rifle from a local shop and even though I had a wait a week and the price was a little higher I didn't regret it.

2. Same as above for scopes.

3. Their pricing on components is horrible and many times their inventory is exhausted. Local shop has a significant better inventory of bullets and powder and rarely out of any item they stock.

4. The checkout lines, at least at the Hamburg, PA store is horrendous - especially on weekends. It's a painful shopping experience.

On the positive side, their hunting footwear (Cabela's brand) is good and service is adequate. The food is good too and the animal displays are terrific. It's a great place to visit to have a meal and look around but not for buying gun ware items.

It all fairness I haven't visited them in over 2 years so I don't know if they've improved their service or inventory since Brass Pro Shop took over.

Go to Cabelas in Rapid City, tell them I am visiting for a week and need some info on fly fishing. They hook me up with their fly fishing guy. I was also there to buy a fly rod-reel-line kit. The guy puts me on to a decent Kit, disassembles the reel, reassembles then re ties the line and leader for me. He chooses a dozen or so fly's, grabs a map of the black hills and takes a half hour to point out the places I should try and what fly's to throw, gives me the map to take along. Tells me to come back in a few days to let me know how I did so he can tailor my locations and fly's for me.

Whenever I go into a Cabelas they have enough employees to help you. All of them have been knowledgable in their department. I know they hate being owned by BPS. Everyone in any Cabela's I have visited has been nothing but nice, polite and helpful. I agree their outdoor clothing with the Cabela's tag is far superior to any clothing, bag etc I have purchased at BPS.

Painful to watch them disintegrate. Used to be like my kind of Disneyland.
