First Sign of a Barrel Wearing Out ......

.... is shots occasionally go in one direction from group center?

Caused by residue settling in the throat bottom that makes a jacket flaw causing bullet to leave the bore some seconds of arc off line of fire. Direction determined by rifling twist and length.

not a competition shooter, but, the two that I have had 'shot out' both had their groups go from .5-.6 to over an inch. I have one now that I'm chasing the lands on to try and get the last few rounds out of the barrel, but soon, it will be replaced as well.

Edit to update: Currently, with my cartridges loaded for 3.25" COAL, the ogive is .1 off of the lands. The gun will shoot .5-.75" consistently now. In a few hundred rounds, I'll be longer than I can put in the magazine. At that point, I'll re-barrel.

BTW, the cartridge is a 25-06.

This happened to my rifle after about 2000 rounds, but instead of rebarreling i used that product from Brownells ( new barrel in a can) it rebuild's the rifling on a molecular level so you never need a new barrel.

Once I started shooting a 6ppc, all of my other guns are suspected of having worn out barrels.
Slowly, very slowly, building funds to own my first PPC. I won’t compete, but a friend does and what he can do with it just blows me away.

For some the First sign is ? I should have done better in that Match ??

It's that Barrel time to order …..

:):):)or when a guy posts a pic of a 1/2” group shot at 500 with “the hot new cartridge “:eek::eek::eek:

Loses speed first, then some erratic flyers at distance that dont jive with conditions, then flyers and patterns at 100yd. Some guys will say throat erosion, but that slowly changes from brand new. I dont consider .025-.030" of throat length increase as a sign barrel is done.

I'm referring to the powder and primer residue that falls to the bottom of the chamber similar to what happens in 22 rimfire barrels. The bottom on the rimfire throat turns dark starting at 5 o'clock to 7 and when it's a half circle from 3 CW around to 9 it's time to rebarrel.

I recently read that someone at Sierra Bullets tracked a 308 Win test barrel accuracy and after after several hundred rounds it would occasionally shoot a bullet a bit further away from group center. Always in the same general direction. Moreso in the next several hundred shots.

Maybe Kevin Thomas could chime in and comment.

Scoping mine showed it was beginning to crackle, lands were worn & splitting, copper was filling those splits. Times were near ...

At matches the groups were getting bigger not smaller. I was unable to call my shots with any consistency.
That new barrel I had waiting on the shelf started calling my name.
I could feel it in my bones....
It was time.
