115gn D-Tacs won't shoot

Try 44 to 44.5 grains of h4831sc
Thanks. this was my pet load/powder for my first XC, this now runs at 3100fps in this 3 groove barrel.
Now looking for a load to try the Sierra 107's.

Plenty of freebore as the the 105's are too short in the case. 115's are barely halfway down the neck.

I was shooting DTAC 115 RBTs just yesterday through my 1:8 28 inch Krieger. Shooting prone off a bipod and crappy rear bag I was easily shooting .3inch groups at 100yds. I usually shoot in the .2s off a bench with a high dollar front rest and great rear bag. The weather was crappy yesterday. Hot and extremely humid. 40.0g H4350 with MV 2995. Ten shot sample group SD was 2 which is the best ammo I have ever loaded. I'll stick with the DTACs :)

I wish I had that.

I tried the Sierra 107's today, same result different day but worse. maybe I'll screw the barrel out.
Your time and frustration is worth something. A barrel is expensive but not really when compared to the components and time put into shooting it.

If you're unhappy with the performance and it doesn't shoot any known good bullets well, then get a new barrel and save yourself the heartache!

If you're wanting to play some more, I'd buy a box or 108 or 105 bergers to try. I'd also try another powder, like RL-17 or IMR-4350. I've yet to meet a gun that didn't shoot imr-4350 But I've had one that didn't like H4350

Thanks everyone, I'm done with it. Nearly 300 rounds since new for load development and testing powder and bullets and i'm no further advanced.
Maybe a Dasher might do better.

I would try and reach out to “shootdots” on this site as he has a lot of experience with the 6/6.5 cartridges. He will probably be able to help you out!

The barrel has been removed, apparently the 3 groove is VERY difficult to get running according to the barrel maker.

try a known bullet (105 VLD etc) then try another scope !!!!,,,check the twist ,sometimes the bbls are mis-marked and are some other twist (like one in 14 !!!!),,,your accuracy is terrible,,I suspect the scope,,,no bble is that difficult to get "running"...Roger

I'm 1 for 4 with a dtac. It's a long, heavy bullet that by no means looks temperamental. 2 of the failures to get it shooting I did all that I know how to do. This last attempt, I pulled the barrel scratching my head, it would not shoot at 100, or 500 yards. One day testing, nothing looked good at 500, so I shoot 4 different charges at 750 so I do not have to pull the bullets, and it shot a fantastic group. < Right there was my mistake, because it caused me to keep trying.
In my experience, you throat a barrel specifically for a dtac, good luck shooting a more streamlined bullet.

Well the barrel has been removed and sent back to the maker, it appears it may have some steel imperfections in the bore. enough said I have a warranty replacement 1-7.75T same my first XC. a fresh start with all my go to loads for the XC.

Congratulations on a successful re-start of your testing! Good for the barrel maker to stand behind their product. :)

I bought a bunch of 6XC components including some 115s for testing. Unfortunately, work is interfering with getting this project underway. I'm working with the other end of the spectrum, big boomers for ELR.:D

Enjoy the process!

Glad to see it all came together for you......When you get a few $ ahead consider a Hawkeye borescope. They pay for themselves over time. Like inspecting new barrels before chambering etc......;)........Happy Shooting

Slightly off topic, but there is a Litz paper: Understanding Long Range Bullets or something like that on the applied ballistics website that talks about how the destabilizing effects (velocity) on the bullet are going away faster than the stabilizing ones (rotation), a.k.a Sg increases as the bullet proceeds downrange. This is all fun theory though, because the reality is that if it groups poorly at 100, it won't group appreciably better at 600 or 1000. Wind and everything else will just start to cover up the lack of raw precision.

However, Bryan goes into this subject in depth in his Modern Advancements in Long Range Shooting II book with in-depth range testing with bullets passing through two targets at different distances with a large range of calibres / bullet weights to see if he can produce any examples of 'angular group convergence'. In a 47-page paper with 15 results tables that must have involved firing scores (hundreds?) of test groups, he didn't find any evidence of this phenomenon.

(These books are increasingly becoming shooting and handloading 'Mythbusters' exercises with practical testing of a variety of practices as well as going into the possible theoretical backgrounds and contain some really fascinating stuff.)
