Simple question.... hopefully simple answer

I am wanting to build a benchrest rifle. Keep it under 16.5 lbs and would like to shoot 600-1000 yards. It will be a 6mm bra and will probably have a bat action and a McMillan stock. I just don’t know what barrel contour I need to maximize the round. Can any of you fellows help me out with this length and contour question. Thanks for listening.

I think 28-30 inches long, HV type taper to 1 inch at muzzle.

EDIT: Correction, HV is a taper to 0.9 at the muzzle as shown below. I was going off memory.

My 600/1000 BR rifles have Heavy Varmint (HV) contour barrels. Finished at 28 inches. Final weight (depending on action, stock and scope etc.) anywhere from 16.0 to 16.3 pounds.

For reference is a Krieger #17 HV contour:

One additional consideration: a 30" may get you another 30fps, but is a custom length. Most "in stock" barrels are 29, for a finished length around 28. So that's the cheaper, faster route.

Update ..... barrel ordered. Krueger 1-8” 31”. Got it at Bruno’s. They had 29” 3 days ago. Y’all fellows eat them up. Next up the trigger.

Not 100percent but I really like the ones that Alex Wheeler are doing. The foam filled with the adjustable rudder. Not sure on the actual name. I have been reading a lot about those. Do you have a suggestion? The lighter I can keep the stock the more barrel I can have is the way I see it. I am VERY new to this. But it is happening and I look forward to this being a community build. I will keep this thread and we will see how it comes out in the end.
