Timney trigger will not cock

muleman69

Had fits this morning with my trigger. It is a Timney in a Salvage 112 action . It will cock every time in or out of stock until you load a round, then no cocking? There is plenty of engagement and it is squeaky clean?

Check your Bolt Stop Release on the right hand side. - IF it hangs up it can cause this type of problem. - I experienced this After doing a bedding job on the stock. - I'm using a Rifle-Basix SAV-2 trigger & experienced this same described problem. - Insure that the Bolt-Stop isn't hanging up anywhere & is returning full travel. (Mine was on a Savage Model 112 Magnum Target action & I've seen it as well on the Model 12 Target actions).

I know it's the weekend, but this is a question Timney could answer with out guessing.

Yes, they probably could, but they may also refer the OP Back to Savage. - I've experienced this problem first hand & that is where I would check. - Baring lack of Sear engagement caused by a badly misadjusted trigger, this is where I feel the OP should check. - It took me a couple hours to diagnose as everything functioned flawlessly when the barreled action was removed from the stock, just as the OP has stated.

LA50, yes I would go over the adjustments on the Timney. Sometimes when trying to adjust down to a lighter pull, everything goes sideways. Savage trigger design is a bit loose and anything can change it's performance.

Dummy Round or a fired case, either will work. - Not claiming to be the forums "Savage Guru" but I do know a decent amount about them and I've seen this problem that the OP is speaking of with an Accu-trigger and a SAV-2 (not a Timney). The design of the Accu-Trigger and after-market replacements (i.e. Rifle Basix SAV-2 and others I'm suspecting) setting for sear engagement is directly tied to the bolt stop release on the right-hand side. - Also, IF there are 2 Allen set screws at the rear on the Timney trigger for the Safety function, these being out of adjustment may possibly prevent correct cocking / functionality.

Bolt stop seems to be working fine,I will take stock off and check for Allen screws.

The reason that I mentioned the bolt stop, If you look at how the bolt stop connects to the "U" shaped piece just forward of where the trigger mounts you will see that it links to the forward-most point on the Timney trigger (which I looked at a photo of on their web-site) which is sear engagement. - There is an Allen-Set-screw and a jam-nut to tighten to set the amount of sear engagement.
You stated in your P.M. reply that you purchased the action here on the forum, Just in case they didn't provide you instructions on the trigger, I've attached them for reference. - Possibly they can help you get it sorted. - You also mentioned that your Safety didn't work, I would address that through Savage or a reputable Savage parts provider.

Regarding "Oh well, there goes another fine thread.." - I'm not sure who or what you are referring to Sir (@Tommie) but my efforts in my communications on this thread are to try to help the OP if possible, nothing more, nothing less.

I'd buy a Rifle Basix Sav 2 like I have on a 12 LRPV. I have several Timney's, but I won't have anything that doesn't function correctly every time when it comes to firearms. I'm sure you'll get it straightened out, but my opinion applies to me only here.

Good info LP50,I will check this out. Not sure whats up with Tommie ? My Dad always told us if you got nothing to say why say anything at all....lol Thanks again

First two things I would do is check the sear spring to see if it is moving the sear fully forward. Second, turn overtravel screw out a turn & see what happens, sear may be dragging on top of trigger.
