6BRA versus 6 Dasher @ 600 yards

Sam said it! It just makes things so much easier! I hate making dasher brass . And, not nearly as many drops...

I have shot the 6 BRA for the last 2 years and several shooters ask me whether it is better than the Dasher..... Well, in my case the answer is NO . My evidence is strictly anecdotal, but there are several shooters trying the BRA and so far they have been unable to dislodge the Dasher from the top spots. Over the past two years, the following shooters have been winning most of the matches: Doug Wasson-6 Dasher, Jeff Turner- 6 Dasher, Johnny Costello-6 Dasher, and Mark Kurtz-6 Dasher. I can't remember a single first place being won with a 6 BRA. There has been some 300 yard wins with it but for 600 yards, I don't know if the Dasher will be replaced any time soon. (at least at our range). I once won a few matches, but all were with the Dasher. I still have a Dasher barrel but it has high mileage and I have two BRA's. Been thinking of setting back the newest BRA barrel and rechambered it for Dasher. However, I may just take two aspirins and go to bed. Good shooting...James CORRECTION- Rickey Reeves won a 600 yard match with the 6BRA.
I believe the current NBRSA 600 & 1000 champions are running 6 bra

James, if that load does not shoot like that again, try some CCI BR-4 primers. I personally have not had much luck with Fed 205M primers. They are much softer also, I am afraid of piercing one in competition too. I know they are the primer of choice in a PPC and I am sure some have had luck with them in the AI, but they are not my choice. CCI-450’s shot the best for me in a Dasher, but not in the 6BR-AI, BR-4’s will tighten it up. That’s just my experience.

I have two BRAI barrels. The above three shot group was shot with a Lederer barrel, while the 5-shot group below was shot with a Brux barrel/Varget powder/CCI 400.

Another way would be to just shoot both cartridges in the same barrel and rechamber so you take the barrel out of equation...or is it the wind?

You guys find the perfect cartridge. Have a great groundhogs hunter shoot it. I will take a good experienced match shoot with whatever cartridge he shoots and he will win a match between them at least 95 percent of the time. Get your money out boys. Ok, you don't like the groundhogs shooter, I will let you pick an experienced shooter who typically is in the bottom half of matches he shoots in.

Jeff, are the groundhog shooters to which you refer akin to the "barber shop" shooters of our area? They will look at a target shot in competition and state my .243, 7 Mag, .30-06, etc. can do much better than that. However, when they are invited to show that accuracy in a match.....they disappear. Good shooting.....James PS- the targets shown below were shot at the NBRSA Nationals in KC, KS in 2010. These are the 200 yard sporter targets. Even these targets do not impress the barber shop crowd.

Guys, it is all in the barrel. I was shoot a 6BRX when I was the first to go below 1.0" with a 0.749" LG group in 2007. At that time the 6BRX was setting records right and left. My BRX liked 2975 F/S, and so was the others shooting. I have had 5 BRX barrels, all shot very well at 2975 f/s. What is the speed of the 6BRA. It running around 2975 F/S. Sam Hall came around with his 6mmBR and kicking everything butt. Then many others with Dasher's. Any of the 6BR IMP will do it. If you have that Hummer barrel, it's going to shoot. I had one, I know. I still have my BRX, but if I would change today, it would be a 6BRA. IT'S ALL IN THE BARREL.

James, I know those guys.LOL..I was referring to all those seeking the magic cartridge. Every couple of years it is something else. When I started going to groundhog matches about 20 yrs ago they laughed at my PPC shooting 500yds. That did not last long. I have shot 6BRX s for about 8 years from 100 to a 1000. See a lot of guys with a new gun cartridge combination every other year. Not the answer, I encourage them to continue down their path. Very few of them are a threat. By the way James I always enjoy your ideas.

The 6Bra, Brx, and Dasher all shoot the same nodes as far as I know. Right around 3000 fps.
Right! Most everyone seems to be finding accuracy at 2920-2970. When I first tested the BR-AI (BRA), I got up to 3050fps easily with no pressure signs yet. But accuracy was definitely getting progressively worse in that barrel as I got over 2920. I know people use to say there was another node higher back when I was shooting a Dasher. I never could find it myself and started wrecking brass when I tried to get over 3000fps. So I always ended up finding my accuracy node with it in 2920-2970 fps range. Same for the BRX when I shot it for a couple of years.

Good to know.

I tried 2 6BRA barrels 3 different powders, 5 different projectiles, lots of primers and I couldn't get anything to stay consistent and my primer pockets got loose (wasn't even pushing it).
I have also gone back to 6BRX and am staying there.. load tested and shot at 500 meters and a 1.16inch group (idiot me got nervous with last shot and went left haha). Backed it up with a 1.56 inch group and another bloke shot shot my gun and got a 1.21 inch group at our national fly shoot 32.44gr of 2208/varget (slow barrel this one 2935fps), cci450, 107gr smk at 020 jump ..

I am thinking that something else is going on if someone were to claim that a 6Bra "won't shoot" but a BRX will... They are so similar. I think something else would have to be going on.

comagusta, Great shooting! Thanks for your comparison of the two caliber’s.
Does anyone over there shoot the 6x47 Lapua with the 107SMK, and if so what results are they having? Thanks.
