Do it yourself Stock making thread

Then I inlet for the hardware with my drill press/cross-slide table abomination

The hardest part is getting the cross hole to line up exactly with the hole in the hardware....I dont have any good advice for that portion except measure twice....three times and drill once

Little more clean up and I am getting closer on this one

Too funny! I had thought about doing the exact same thing with my Fein tool on that prone stock with the fancy cheek piece! I went the safer route. Nice use of a recoil pad, by the way!;):)

CStuck, are you able to tell me what type and brand of bit/tool you are using to mill the recess in your first photo above?

Please forgive the basic question. Im pretty new at this wood thing.

@GunmanBlue
Sure thing, but keep in mind that my set up is not the most ideal or most precision. It's cheap and gets the job done, with shallow passes and a slow pace it works fine for me.

My set up is a Jet 3/4hp 16 speed drill press. A homemade depth stop and down feed contraption. For the bit pictured it is Sharps 4 flute 5/8 end mill ti . I have a few roughing end mills for the bulk of the wood removal and clean it up with a sharper bit.

I also have a cross slide table from eBay. That has a lot of slop in it, so I've replaced some shims and acme screws to tighten it up a bit. And then just a drill press vise and soft jaws.

Hopefully that description helps

CStuck thanks very much for the comprehensive reply.

Ill be heading out next week to try and pick up a set or at least a few sizes.

Cheers

Project rescue stock is coming along. Forend sides are now almost actually parallel, just have another 60thou of taper to remove. Final width will be just about 2-7/8". Next I will use my parallel rule to true up the butt to the forend, then slim its profile down. I got this stock over the winter off the classifieds here as a "bubba built" special from Thud (no, he didnt make it) originally for rimfire BR, it will get new inletting for R700 single shot. Wood was too pretty to let it go to waste.

Not entirely sure yet. I got some ideas and examples from a thread here a while back, I do kinda like the darker style finishes, though. Not sure what's on it now, but I will strip it completely before I get to that point. Right now just working through the existing finish.

Let me know if you decide to use dye.
I can give you pointers to an eye popping Finnish

Where can I find this information. I have stock that although I really don't want to spend hours refinishing it, I originally wanted it that golden maple color.
You can watch YouTube videos on custom guitar building.i learned and continue to learn from my brother in law

It will set that stock on fire!!!!

Only problem is it will look like a ball gown on a warthog with my ratty looking 700 going in it, lol! But, it will be nice to have a decent stock for shooting from a rest, currently sitting in a 40XB stock, I also have a 40XBR stock I'm going to modify too.
