It’s been a long winter working on it. Was doing a laminated one but made a big mistake and could not fix it. So started over. It all paid off. This thread was a huge help. Thanks

I recently found a great connection to a local lumber yard. I happened across this property via Craigslist. Once I dialed up the phone number, it turns out I knew the gentleman. We had used his previous employer for contract clearing work. My day job is working for a site development company and we perform earthwork and utilities, but subcontract the clearing work. Turns out he had been stashing away all the pretty logs during his days working for the clearing company. He stores the logs and mills them into boards as a "retirement" hobby. Its is alot of work so I dont know how retired he really is.
All that said, if you guys are looking from some wood, I can probably find something at a really good price and send it to you. @joshb I owe you one for all the great advice, insight, and kind words you have brought to the table in this thread.
I bought a few pieces of cherry for only $50! I got two stocks from a piece I bought. My uncle-in-law Danny also bought a $50 piece and he was able to get three out of it! The minute the piece came out of the planer I knew it was going to be beautiful! I couldn't wait to get shaping.
( the walnut is from a different supplier)
I need to fill those cracks with Epoxy resin- I am thinking of doing either a dark red, or maybe a gold....havent decided yet.

Do you have the ability to spray finishes?
If so look at simtech clear sanding sealer.
3 coats out of a 1.7 needle/nozzle set will fill most of it. After spraying 1st coat work it in with latex gloves and a bondo spreader. Then apply a couple more heavy coats. Then block out.
I would also look at trans tint dyes.
Vintage amber as your darker tone and honey amber as your lighter.
I might be able to spray. My uncle-in-law has a spray booth, but he is moving shops so I dont know if I will be able to at his new location. I will look up the Simtech clear sanding sealer, he has a similar product I believe

That looks gawgeous! Does he have any walnut? For those cracks to fill, scan the internet for stone dust filler. I have some mesquite that I’m going to use turquoise dust in. I was inspired by a cutting board my wife bought in Wyoming. Ya just mix it in the epoxy and squeegy it into the cracks.
That is more of what I had in mind to do, haven't picked a color yet. I found a few 10 color "sample packs" that I could order for a decent price. I think I may try that
He does have some walnut, he has a lot of 4/4 & 8/4, here are some photos of what my local guy has, he has more I just didn't take a ton of pictures when I was over there. There is at least 3 or 4 barns full of wood, some on display, some packed & stacked banded together

Do u use the Simtech under automotive clears also???
I started finishing stocks with Minwax oil based spar urethane on walnut which worked fine. However it did not work well on laminates because the colors of the laminates changed do to yellowing of the urethane, e.g., blues changed to greens, etc.
I tried Minwax water based exterior urethane to alleviate the color change. Results were better but there was still a color shift over time.
I now use automotive clears exclusively however it usually takes two spray sessions @ 3-4 coats per session to fill the pores/cells and achieve a level surface, sanding after each session. Then one final spray session before final sanding and polishing.
Would using the Simtech sanding sealer as the leveling coats minimize the clearcoat sanding sessions without causing color shifts in laminates??

You would need to use their bond tech 1st.
Wait 24 hours. Work it into the stock with rubber gloves and a squeegee.
Prime with their transparent polyester sealer.
Wait 24 hours to sand.
Then you can apply candy coats and clear
EDIT YOU CANNOT APPLY SIMTECH OVER AUTOMOTIVE CLEAR!!!!!!!
Automotive clear is softer than simtech . When the simtech dries it will cause the automotive clear to pull away from the wood.

Oh yeah, there are barns stacked to the ceiling with: Walnut, cherry, persimmon, osage orange, red oak, white oak, sweet gum, locust, poplar, cedar, pecan, hickory, and a few others I cant remember. If you ever find yourself near Clover South Carolina I can link you guys up and he will gladly show you around his stockpiles

I have always thought I would like to make something out of pecan, but have never seen any thing. So I searched for pecan limber and hit images. I have never seen some much variation, no two looked the same. Now I don't have any idea what a pecan stock would look like. There was one that had every color and shade under the sun it looked really nice.
