Old 700 bolt

Will an older 700 bolt without the lug slot work in a recent action? What is the purpose of the slot?

It won't actually fit unless you cut a slot in it.

It's a bolt guide yes you will have to mill a slot in it just be careful where you do the slot.

I searched, but couldn't find it. A video I think I remember seeing, by speerchucker, cutting a slot on a mill with a slitting saw.

Thanks - saw one on Ebay and you can tell from the bolt handle style it's an old one.
