What these rifles are worth at any given time is what they will fetch in the market. I don’t see rifle prices going up any time soon. There’s more competition in the new market with newer cnc equipment building very high quality new rifles at lower costs. Look around at the matches and notice how old the average competitor is. They’re getting old and not being replaced at the pace they’re dropping out. Fewer customers chasing more and better products drives used prices lower. Wishing all of us the best when we go to sell but I’m guessing I’m going to get less that I would like when I sell a couple of rifles in the coming months.

A democrat gets elected.
F class takes off in popularity like PRS.
N. Koreans invade and guys melt into the local populace to turn into militia snipers.
That one guy is trying to get into F class quick and buys a package at whatever price.
Guy gets injured and can’t hunt like he use to. He sets up a bench over looking a field for a thousand yards and needs the right gun.
List goes on...supply and demand.

Two lessons to be learned here- build with an action people are wanting and dont try to get a dime for a used barrel. If its got one round or 2500 its the exact same thing. Its not to you but to the buyer thats the way it goes. Never buy a used barrel thinking it is even usable much less competitive. So the price of a used rifle is the action- maybe at a discount, maybe full new price according to how long it takes to get one, the stock (same as the action) trigger at market price and there you have it. According to the gunsmith who built it maybe add in half to 3/4 that labor or maybe none for the fancy shop opened 2 years ago type guys. Way too many guys selling nice rigs at cheap prices for whatever reason these days. The market is saturated.

So, $1400 shipped sounds fair?
Actually paid $1450 for it new with case.
Then their prices went up $1900.
I picked up scope for $400 last summer out of classifieds. This puts my actual cost at $1850 not counting scope mount.
So yeah all things considered $1400 would be a fair price for it if it wasn't for that damn boating accident!

The market is full no doubt, but 70's and 80's Rem 700's go for 700-900, where I would offer 250.
If I sell, I just try get full price for the action and the stock if not abused or close to pristine, some for the trigger, then eat the barrel and labor costs.
Sometimes a rifle sells better parted out, sell barreled action, then the stock.

Yeah that’s right it’s worth what you can get but what you can get can vary for many reasons.

For some reason when people hear or see AR they do this....

So anything over $500 and the seller is automatically an asshat. And yes my rifle had a SWFA so in actuality it was only worth $450 for the scope with a free rifle attached to it.
Got to be realistic in pricing to make buyers happy because that’s all that matters.
Edit: damn! I can’t find the original scope box. Price reduced to $150 for the scope and rifle combo!!

Exactly. It amazes me that people don’t get this. If you commission a gunsmith to do a new BR build with good components you may end up at 3.5 to 5K our of pocket or somewhere close to that. Shoot it for a single season, then try to sell and see what it fetches. It will be about half of what you paid. The seller doesn’t have to like it, but that’s how it is.
As a seller, if you don’t go in to this with eyes wide open you are just fooling yourself. Makes no difference what you paid. Just like buying a new car. The first guy takes the big hit. The second owner gets the deal if he’s patient.
Supply: I don't see that decreasing. We're talking about very durable goods here that are still being produced.
Demand: I don't see that increasing. Bolt action rifles are perceived safe from legislation. Bench rest, is it really all that popular? Couple that with ever changing trends in chamberings and such. I'd wager chances are demand decreases.
The vast majority of hobbies are like this. You'll get pennies on the dollar.
