.300 WSM WOW!

I am setting up my SA to shoot .300 WSM. May have to pull a loaded round by removing the bolt. But that is rare and not a huge issue.
This was the route I went with a SAAMI spec chamber. My OAL is 2.882" I am losing to much case capacity with 210 Bergers. I am considering buying a longer action and most likely will soon.

I have H4350 and H4831sc on hand with a bunch of 210 VLDs. What kind of velocity are you folks seeing with these powders?

You could just have the freebore lengthened to allow for the longer, heavier rounds. My rifle now is set up for .308 Win. I shoot 185gr and can load the 200-20X with no problem and no compression of powder.

On my new barrel that will be .300 WSM, I plan to have the freebore cut to allow me to use up to the 230gr Berger Hybrids without any issues.

Steve, - I'm running a 0.270 Lead/Throat (U & V on the JGS reamer print) in 2 competition rifles and this puts the old 200 gr. hybrids, 210 LR BT's, 210 VLD's, & the 215 hybrids all with the bearing surface lower point (pressure ring) above the shoulder/neck junction on a 0.3395 neck-turn chamber. - I'm having one barrel done now with the same reamer that I plan to shoot 230 gr. Bergers & the 230 gr. Sierra in. - The 230 gr. OTM will be fine in a 0.280 throat but I think I'll need to go to 0.300 - 0.310 for the 230 gr. hybrid targets which I'll do with a JGS un-Throater & "T"-handle on that 1 barrel.

In a 30" Broughton 5C with H-4350 I'm running at 2910 fps @ sea-level running 210's in a Light-Class gun
In a 32" Krieger 5R with H-4831 ssc I'm running at 2967 fps @ sea-level running 215's in a Heavy-Class gun

The 2nd BAT 3LL is under construction and will be a Hvy-class gun set-up to run 230's in a 32" Krieger 5R. - I'll let the target tell me what load to run. - I plan to start load development using RL-23 & H-4831 ssc

Ron,
What twist you going to run in the 32" barrel? I am thinking about 1:8.5.

Patrick, - I'm running a 1-10" on the 32" and it has done well with 215 gr. Berger hybrids. - That is 5 shots @ 200 yds when I started load development. - At Deep Creek in 2018 (Nationals) I managed a 5.7" Ten shot 99 score group on the first relay during my rookie outing.

It's your decision on what twist you go with of course but I don't personally believe that 1-8.5 is needed, even for the 230 gr. Sierra new bullet. And I don't see 30 cal. solids (Flatline, or CEB) out shooting Bergers or Sierra's at 1000 yds. - I don't know of any of the 1000 yd. LR BR shooters entertaining these bullets, they just don't shoot as accurate. - IF your planning on shooting 230's exclusively then a 1-9 or a 1-9.5 is the most I personally would go, I've never seen where extra twist rate improved accuracy and for me that's what this is about.

The 300 WSM isn't an ELR cartridge IMO, But, it is a very accurate 1000 yard cartridge.

My first .300 WSM barrel had a 10" twist and took fifth at the 2013 Nationals in Raton. Subsequent barrels were 9.75". New orders will be 9.5" but there is no need to go faster. I have only shot 230 Target Hybrids. My .280" freebore was never a problem but .300" would be fine, if using 230s. For 215s, .300" might be a bit far.

Thanks LA50 and Steve.
No arguing that you are getting good performance out of your barrels.

Planning on 32" 5R but haven't set on a twist. I ran the calculations with the Berger Twist Rate Stability Calculator, a 1:9.5 just barely stabilizes the 230 gr Hybrid round at 2950 fps.

1:10 a SG of 1.38
1:9.5 a SG of 1.53
1:9 a SG of 1.71
1:8.5 a SG of 1.91

Now what I don't know is how much difference this really makes in the real world. But this is why I keep asking questions and why I was assuming a rate of 1:8.5.

Patrick,

Temperature and Elevation are BIG factors to consider when using a stability calculator. Also, what "perception" do you have that 1.5 is "barely stable ? - Do you have "real world" experience that leads you to believe this ? - And I'm NOT trying to belittle or pick at you at all.
- A 1.5 stability factor is plenty. (I saw a 1-13" twist .308 Win shoot 187 gr. BIB bullets into very small bug-hole groups at 200 & 300 yards, which isn't supposed to happen as the recommended twist is 1-12.5 but it did & repeatedly).

Straight from the BIB website & I'd say Randy knows something about bullets & stability rates. twist rates which impart between 1.4 and 1.9 Sg will provide the best precision. While faster/slower twist rates may work well enough, twist rates which produce Sg outside this window begin to errode potential precision.

I personally believe a 1-8.5 twist is Not going to yield the Best accuracy, because it's not conducive to do so with the bullets we are talking about.

@Steve Blair has done extensive testing using the 230 gr. Bergers in the 300 WSM and has shared a good deal of information here on the forum with the members.

Just managed to win a Long Range Fclass state championship here in Australia with my 300WSM.

Ranges shot were 1000,1100 and 1200yards over two days.

Was very pleased with the performance of the 215 Berger’s going around 2940fps
AWESOME!!! I love it!! Excellent job!!

Thanks guys.

I am getting starting to get to grips with how to shoot this cartridge now.

For me I don’t find the recoil uncomfortable or painful, but you do have to be holding it right for best results.

I got a friend to film me, just firing a 5 shot group during load testing at 1100yards on ET’s a couple of weeks back.

My rifle is built on a Barnard P action, March 8-80scope and barrel is only 1.220” parallel finished at 30inches.

I have a few barrels which I hang off this action at 32” finished 1.250straight and it still only weighs 9.2kg, with this 300WSM barrel it would be under 9kg so is a good 2.5lbs underweight for f-open.
Next barrel will be up to weight and should really tame recoil down even further.
