Do it yourself Stock making thread

Hey guys,
Hope all of you have been doing well. A friend that I've bought a few stock blanks from is liquidating his inventory and he asked if I'd extend the offer to other stock makes I know. Thought some of you maybe interested. He is willing to do some packages so you don't have to purchase his entire remaining inventory. His name is Eric Anderson

I got to thinking, wonder how a Farriers Rasp would do on wood. 1/5th the price of a good woodworkers rasp. So I received a 14 inch Bassolli Big 50, leather sheath and handle. This one blows away everything else I own. Fast and smooth.
I filed a 45 and across the flat of this curly maple cut off. Left section of the piece. Even the file side is fast and leaves a nice finish.DSCF3377 (2).JPG

I bought a gunstock carving duplicator . a used radarcarve with the larger diameter rods this winter that ive been setting up , improving , and then i started making a couple template stocks that are my design so i wont be exactly duplicating anyone elses design... Just starting my first actual stock that will be for my first precision or custom build ..
Took the blank out of the clamps and trimmed it .. Curly maple and paduak

Nice! Are you doing a test stock using pine or some other junk wood? I was glad I did! It lets you work out the kinks.

I love the figure in the maple especially how the patterns line up!
How do you plan on finishing them?

We're trying to decide between honey amber, or burnt orange and black.

I’m going to do a black and red on maple, just like yours! I’m putting epoxy on it, since I have it.

You can use water or 99% alcohol to dilute dye. I use water as the alcohol can react with enzymes in the wood and distort colors.

Here the one I started on today.
In for a refinish, sanded clear off down into wood removed a lot of dings, and nicks.
Dyed 1st with vintage amber but thought it looked to yellow, so I moved to medium brown. Gave it some dry time and sanded first coat, then applied a light wash of medium brown.
Next I'll burnish this with 320grit and give another dye wash of medium brown in the morning.
Here's stock before work began.

That is a beauty,I really dig the herring bone figure in this pic. Looks like a Chevron design point towards the butt. Great job.

@heydogman that is a beautiful stock bud! Well done!! I really like the crisp lines you put in.
- I also use a farriers rasp fairly regularly. I have a Nicholson that has a handle on each end that is nice

I have been working on a new one and teaching myself how to checker. I still have plenty of work to do but I have the basic shaping and inlet done. Now for all the detail work and finishing. This one is for a college roommate and long time friend. He has only seen the picture of the blank and doesn't know it is for him. I think he will be pretty excited once I am done and surprise him for his birthday.

This is my first attempt at checkering a stock grip. I have places to fix but I think it is a good start. This is 18LPI with a 10LPI skip for French Checkering. I wanted to try something different than my typical stippling that would sort of cover the beautiful grain in the grip area
