Savage Action

I'm starting to take a look at the Savage actions because of there barrel switch system, I don't know that much about them, but I know there's a lot of savage shooters here, if I wanted a short action to build a very accurate varmint rifle, which actions would I want to consider? and where would I look to buy it? Thanks

If you get a top bolt release action, you can get a decent trigger for it,Rifle Basic II,and if you can find it, A SSS competition Trigger,If it has the Bottom Bolt Release, you can get fixed poundage triggers to about 1.5 pounds, by Timney,Jard,R.Basic and others. You may be able to get a Gunsmith to help you w/the Bottom Bolt Release SA Trigger

Get one with a top bolt release. There are much better trigger options than the bottom bolt release.

If it were me, I'd get a 12 FV at Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops. They're $420 with a 10% rebate right now. Sell the factory barrel for $150 to $175. Sell the accutrigger for $25 to $50. Buy a Criterion barrel from Northland Shooting Supply for $300 + $20 shipping. Buy a Rifle Basix Sav 2 for about $150. Net cost is around $650.

You would also net an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench. I'd get 'em from Northland, so you don't need to pay extra shipping.

If you want a better stock, there are too many options for me to list. Just be sure it has pillars. Could probably find a very good new or second hand for $200 to $300.

IMO the piece of plastic that they call a stock that comes on the FV models needs to be replaced.

It's a little better than the Savage Tupperware sporter stocks and will work, but yeah, there are much better stocks out there. Finding a used Stockade or SSS laminate would be like winning the lottery. Buying them new might take a year.

Northland has some factory VLP stocks for $220. You'd need to find the bottom metal.

For me, if it's going to be a semi custom build, I'll go Rem 700 every time. I'm sure the Savage actions are a good piece, but to my eyes, they are just fugly. Though I'm no particular fan, I could live with the barrel nut, but those Savage actions are just so chunky and odd looking. Kinda reminds me of the saying about what a fat girl and a moped have in common, they're both fun to ride but you just don't want any of your friends seeing you do it.

Put a good trigger and quality barrel on it and show your friends the target.

Personally for a switch barrel varmint rifle, I'd use a small shank, top release 4.4 action. It offers the most stock options. Large shank is also fine just a bit more money for really nothing gained as a varmint rifle. .223 & .308 bolt heads and whatever barrels you decide on and you'll have a few great varmint rifles in one package.

been using Savage actions for 20 years..started with the ole 4.27"

solid bottom s/shots...now use the target actions...trigger is great

usually change the bolt knob is all.....just remember they are large shank

dog guns are my purpose...pic 2...one of my fav's.....20-222

You need to state if you want a single shot, or a repeater , also there is a forum dedicated to all things Savage. Also, do a search for accucary between switch bbl. rifles that have shoulder fitted barrels and barrels that use the barrel nut.
Check with "gun smiths" and see what they charge for a barrel , to chamber, and head space that barrel, and how long from time of order till you are shooting ?
