Action opinions?

Cort said:
There are more stocks and triggers available for the Remington 700 action than for a Savage action. Both actions can have a barrel nut or a shouldered barrel depending on what you choose. The floating head on the Savage bolt seems to work very well and allows changing bolt faces easily. New bolts that can be carefully fit are available for both actions.

I messed with a Savage Model 12 BVSS for a while but finally switched to Remington because of trigger and stock availability. Today, the problem is not as great as it was when I tried it.

Both actions can be made to shoot very well. Did you see the pictures from the Savage that Rusty Stud setup? And there are lots of Remington 700's that shoot very well. Make your choice and go shooting!

1. you can buy the Savage in a single shot action. This forces you to shoot slower and help to keep heat out of the barrel
2. The Savage from the factory will have better lock time than the Remington, and only slightly slower than a Remington with a speedlock kit
3. you can buy a Savage dual port action with a solid top that's much stiffer than the Remington or standard savage action (about 3 times stiffer)
4. unless your a dedicated bench rest shooter the triggers are about them same when looking at aftermarket stuff. And even the target trigger isn't that far behind a Jewell
5. everybody now makes stocks for Savages, and there are some stocks for Savages that you can't get for a Remington. Even Tom Merideth stocks Savages these days.
6. a factory laminate Savage varmit stock rides the bags much better than a Remington varmit stock (not that either is great)
7. most any after market item is also made for the other rifle if you look around.
8. a long action open top Savage may have an issue with mounting some of the shorter scopes that are in vogue these days. But if you use a rail mount you'll be just fine
9. the single shot actions are not dependent on magazine length for bullet seating
10. the floating bolt head has always got better alignment than a solid bolt does.

Thanks everyone. Im seriously thinking about going with a Pierce Action now but havent totally made up my mind.

I will always go with a custom action if possible, you cant go wrong.

Savage target trigger is no where close to a jewell.

For the money you just can not go wrong with a savage one of the most accurate factory actions and when you grow out of the savage buy a Barnard great action great trigger but I am a prone shooter

have you ever handled a Precision Target rifle from Savage? The one I looked over had about 12oz. pull from the factory with zero creep. Most Jewells I've been around were not much better. I just didn't see a nickel's worth of difference. This dosn't mean I dislike the Jewell, as I think it's a very fine trigger, but have pulled some others that were easilly as good if not better. Try an Anschutze target trigger sometime

for the $650 you'd spend on the Savage target action (with trigger) in a dual port or RBLP action you just can't go wrong in my book. The actions are very strait and very stiff. Not perfect for sure, but knocking on the door

If your prone to swapping barrels and bolt heads like you change your shirt then get a Savage. In looking at the Savages I own they get a barrel, stock(not savage), and never get changed. On a 250.00 action, well I just buy another. Pulling the optics, barrel, reinstalling and doing load workup, well it's just not worth it, but then again I own a lot of rifles. Factor in I think they're ugly as sin and resale, well your going to take a hit. I've never sold a Savage anything for a profit, which is something I can do with a Remington. If I could only own a limited amount of rifles or only had space for a few then no doubt a Savage. I could get it cheap, buy a few barrels and bolt heads and be set. If I want to compete without breaking the bank a Rem clone, probably a Stiller as I know I could pick up the phone and it would be on it's way.
