School me on custom rimfire actions

Serious ignition issues. But, at the time, was a babe in the woods when it came to what makes custom actions work as they should. Two years of trying this, trying that. Went down some side roads with that thing.

Learned a lot, spent more money and time than any sane person should. At the end, 2 hours with some files and hones turned a turd into the most accurate rifle I'd ever owned. Just had to find someone who understood what makes a rifle shoot well. One glance at the bolt and he told me what the issue was. Didn't I feel stupid!

What people new to this need to realize is that a custom action is just an action made by someone other than a factory. What they do, how they go about it, and how "finished" the action is, will vary wildly from action to action. And each action, be it a Turbo, a 10x, a Falcon, etc can require different types of work done to them. Just depends on how they were individually finished.

An example, Tim Miller, one of the best shooters in the country uses the 10x actions. He knows what he wants, knows where to look, and how to get them working best for him. Others use the Turbo actions. Again, they know where the issues are, and how to fix them.

Some feel that this is to be expected because there's no way a person who makes one of these actions can make money if they spent the time needed to refine each to the best it can be. Personally think Jerry Stiller blew this theory out of the water with his actions. But again, it doesn't matter. You pay your money and you get what you get. Up to you to figure it out, or pay to have someone else fix the issues.

Moral of the story for those looking at these things. Choose what you wish, they all can win any match you enter. Some require more work than others to make "right". But if the ignition is correct, if you have a good barrel and good ammo, you can be competitive with anyone out there. A great barrel and great ammo makes you more than competitive.

Which brings up a good point. Any new(ish) shooter that is going to build a new gun and is intent on not following the exact advice of a topflight RIMFIRE gunsmith, would be well advised to buy a Stiller 2500X.
It is the ONLY action available where you screw a barrel on and call it good......period.
Kenny is likely in the distinct minority because there are countless clowns out there with machine tools and/or files that start riffing on these things until they get irreversibly screwed up and sent down the road to haunt some unsuspecting soul that drops out never to return.

Tim, you nailed it! I got lucky and know it. Even with all the tweaking, testing, trying and goofing I'd done in the past with other guns (and I did a lot of stuff with other rifles) had no idea of what I didn't know. Fortunately, am not afraid to try anything, and if I blow chunks, well, it's on me. In reality all I'd done to that first custom was me regurgitating stuff I'd learned from experiences with factory guns. But had no real experience with what makes ignition correct.

Learned some things, so the cost, in time and money was well spent IMO. Experience in anything has costs. Up to the person to determine what those costs are. Would advise people who don't share my outlook on life to not try this at home. You want into this without the hassle of sorting things out, would recommend getting a 2500x and/or Trident, a Shilen Ratchet barrel (or Benchmark/Muller/etc), a trigger (Jewel, FF or Bix), a stock (highly recommend Lidgard for wood, McMillian or Meredith for composite) and a Harrel tuner. Ask around and find someone who comes recommended for putting this together. Get it done and you're in for around $3000-$3500. Then, the ammo chase begins... things get expensive now...

Want to add that some really good people helped me along the way. Both in the sorting out of issues up to how to actually shoot in a match and not make myself look stupid. I learn something everyday from some of the best out there. That's what makes me want to shoot. Not to win anything, not to be somebody. Just want to learn some things and enjoy myself. May sound strange, but I'm kind of odd...

If you want a custom rifle, buy used or buy new. Personally have no preference. Pros and cons to each. But be aware that buying one of these is just the beginning. Enjoy it for what it is.

Great information guys! We appreciate the time you’ve taken to respond to OP’s question with solid advice.

Funny nobody said the best in the country is shooting an Annie....... jim

Joe is a great shooter. Best in country??? Based on what ? Maybe “one of the best” is a bit more appropriate.
A. Not exactly an unaltered Annie.
B. How much you going to base on one gun, or a few, for that matter ?

Maybe I should have said the highest pointed, and he has more than one. Pretty smart guy to do it his way...... jim

There are some pretty good ones out there, I shot a 54 based IR 50/50 sporter for a long time that did very well.
Trouble is that now it’s near impossible to find a top flight guy to work on them, the odds just are’nt in your favor.

Right, now you got guys that assemble parts, Not too many real gunsmiths left. The last guy that worked on mine was my age, mid 70's. It was hard to find one that would even put a barrel in one. It sure was worth it though..... jim

That is simply not correct and if you were a competitor you would know this.
Many guys will blueprint actions, some will lap barrels to taper, and on and on,far cry from parts assemblers by a wide margin.
As stated, few, now will work on an Anschutz for benchrest simply because your odds are much better elseware.

Really, For your information I could not get any well known smiths to even put a barrel in my 54 action. All they want to do is work with custom stuff that is easy to do. if I listed the ones that wouldn't do it, it would more and likely be the ones you are referring to. All I wanted was to set up my end game I have a lot of 50/50 ranges close to me, some as close as 15 miles. I almost sold the barrel, it was that hard to get someone that did good work to do it. I lucked out and from the advice on a smith out west that did work for a forum member that is heavy into the game I got the barrel installed.....jim

They work on stuff that is better not easier.
There is nothing special about an Anschutz, except plenty of them are screwed up by ham fisted plumbers before they get to somebody good, then it’s HIS problem. Nothing more fun than getting a barrel off and finding out the fool could’nt cut a thread and took up the slack with glue......etc.
NOBODY is looking to build a top flight comp gun from that platform, just like no gunsmith any more will work on your sleeved Remington CF BR gun for the same reason.
One of the main reasons these guys won’t do it because somebody who’s a hardhead(hint) gets his gun, gets his ass kicked by a good, curent custom, and then badmouths the smith for building an inferior gun. It is a rare 54 with the kind of consistant ignition to run at the top.

Not the issue here at all, it's fun gun for me when can't travel anymore. I got it back and worked on a tuner for and broke it in a little in doors and the weather got nice and the tuner was set and with SK pistol match I sorted the first 5 shots at 50 yds were under .030. Not bad for a POS. Annie..... jim

Richard Gorham, Killougs shootings sports (kss) gunsmith.

Unless Killoughs has replaced their gunsmith in the last 2 years I would not suggest them to anyone.

I had a bad experience, Yes they offered to correct the issue and I appreciated the customer service. I will not have them work on another of my rifles.

Yeah, that is in bad taste right there, the non specific shot from the internet.
They use the same guy with a proven track record.
Anybody can make mistakes. They offered to resolve it and you are somehow still pissed ? Unless you wish to tell the class a bit about the issue why go out of your way to drop crap on a thread without anything other than a claim ?

I am not one to thread jack, sent you a PM on the subject

Tim,

The question the bichettereds had asked was about recommended smiths, I shard that I had a bad experience. If you don't like that, too bad. Its Friday night, get some rest and go shooting this weekend.

How about the panels opinions on an 10x X-III?
I have an opportunity to pic one up from a hall of fame shooter and what little I've read seems to positive.
