6Br NEWBIE ! WOW

CBFEAF96-0715-4ACA-912F-40639FC75949.jpeg Just got my 30” Shilen 6BR Barrel to put on my Savage F class and I’m a very happy camper . Started with Virgin Lapua Brass, 107 SMK and 28.1 grains of Varget (Sierra accuracy load). I’ve been practicing all winter for my first F class match and I feel Im finally ready !!!!! This is a pic of my last 300 yard group at the range last weekend . I usually shoot like 10 in a group but I stopped at 3 because I had to go check out what looked like an amazing group ! Measured under 1/4 inch . Somebody pinch me !

Welcome to the 6BR!!!

That's a good looking rig you've got there!

Work with the load you have and see just how good it will do at distance, and if you find it to be unsatisfactory, you can always change things up to make it better.

Thank You ! You don’t think the 28.1 will handicap me in F Class ? I read where guys are using 30 plus grains !

With your 30" barrel, it MIGHT do better with a little bit more powder, but the only way to know whether or not it be better is to test it and see.

You can always load up from where you are now in 3/10 grain increments until you hit YOUR GUNS maximum load, then start backing down in small incrememts, looking for your most accurate load. Keep everything else the same, so you are working with only "1" variable at a time.

Your 300 yard 3-shot group pictured above looks good, but shoot thar same load at 600 yards and increase your round count. If it goes outside of 2" at that distance, then there will be need for improvement.

2” at 600 yards ????? Yowza ! That’s tight . I only have 500 yards and if I could hold 2” at 500 I’d be ecstatic!

I'm sure all of these AS target guys will shoot 2" groups or better @ 600 yards, as I find that to be the maximum group size average for a long range rifle.

I personally have never shot a registered match, though I shoot with a lot of guys who do.

For the most part with a couple of exceptions, since I am a hunter and not a target shooter, I limit most of my groups to only 3 shots, and as such, it is very easy to keep those three shots inside 2" at 600 yards.

2” at 600 yards ???? Man that’s tight . I’ve only got 500 yards and if I can shoot a 2” group at 500 yards I might pee myself ! Lol

Well.... you have a gun and cartridge that is easily capable of 2" groups at 600 yards, and no bs here, but you should definitely be able to do that at 500 yards without issue.
