Take down rifle

I was looking at a Westley Richards take down big game rifle and wondering what is involved to a repeatable lockup. Attaching the for end stock to the barrel looks to be the big difference to a bench rest change barrel set up.

What i wouldnt give to have something like that. Hell id just like to know a guy i could hang out with that could afford one. I think in this case, an african takedown rifle, in a curiously large caliber such as 505 gibbs, does it really matter what the accuracy is? I mean if it will repeat back to minute of elephant at 45yds is that acceptable? How accurate could you shoot a very heavy 505 gibbs offhand even if it wasnt a mauser copy takedown, and built to benchrest standards?

Sights are on the barrel . We're not talking scopes on dangerous game .

Was thinking the barrel threads would need to be coarser as not to muck them up with repeated take down and some kind of click to hold the barrel in a locked position. Has anyone handled a rifle like this? Think there is a gunmaker in the US named Hielman who made one as well.

The detents are usually in the metal plate attached to both sides ( ends of the parted stock )of the stock . Sometimes a detent is also going up thru the front trigger guard screw . Maybe detent is wrong word for the trigger guard , the receiver is drilled thru and the screw is long enough to reach a shallow hole in the barrel threads . I've only seen one like that . I've also seen one with a screw offset on the receiver that had a screw engaging a cut thread , one on one side to tighten and another on the other to remove . It worked nice and gave a good snug fit .

So where would be the weak link in accuracy in this barrel to receiver relationship? Having the for end separate reminds me of a ruger #1

there has to be at least a dozen in a design like that. it was never designed for accuracy- it was meant for killing very big and dangerous things before they eat you and to look good in a glass front gun cabinet. it was never meant for shooting groups so if you get one don't be let down. its the top of the heap for what its designed for- to be a beautiful piece of art and to kill on both ends.

Winchester 73 was offered takedown & wasn't ever a big game gun.

The Dakota Traveler was a great design IMO. No threads to wear as it had a barrel extension with lugs that slipped into the split front receiver and a tightened screw underneath clamped the assembly tight.

I can not afford a Westley Richards gun but I want to be prepared if I win the lottery.

Sounds good dusty but don't hold your breath the only thing I ever won was a quarter hog from the tire store raffle.

Curtiss custom vector action has provision for easy barrel changes

That barloc nut that arc makes is an easy quick way as well.
