Sorry to keep "banging" on about my journey to shooting out to further distances (for me at least).
So work was slow, and by slow, I mean dead slow. The weather here is great, 29 degrees C, blue sky... I took the opportunity to take the afternoon off, and head off to see the brother-n-law. He's still got the pesky Canadian Geese, and potential to shoot safely out to between 500 to 600 m. After Arriving I took the opportunity to scare (miss) some geese at 427 m, which is only just further than what I have been able to hit on, at 400 m approx. So a little deflated at that, slight cross breeze, so maybe I didn't slap the trigger?
Oh well, time for a coffee and a chat about trying to shoot out to 500 m. A plan was hatched, quad bike sent to collect one of the gongs we had already set up else where. I took off on foot, with another smaller gong, and light collapseable stand, rifle, magnetospeed, ammo, rangefinder, binos...heck maybe I should have had the quad! Anyway, we set up the gongs at 490m (10" round), and 527 m (12" square), well that is what I ranged them at, Awesome! Dialled up the Zeiss elevation turret to what the shooter app said. Got into position, and missed at 527 m. Rookie mistake, there where some pine trees sheltering our shooting position and about 1/2 of the way to the gongs. Mt brother-n-law asked, "Are you sure well hear it "Dong", from here?" We should I said. So with a little bit of hold the left side of the gong. I managed to get 3 dongs in a row, the last of the three center plate! Then I played miss the 10" gong for a couple of shoots. I think I still need to "true" the app solution for this load, as checking that gong when we finished showed all the hits were high. Yes, I did manage to hit it a 5 times
.
And again, it took a fair amount of "nudging", but I got brother-n-law behind the rifle. Fist up miss on the 12", then a hit! And this was followed by an even better celebration that the previous outing. This one still had the giggling, and smiling, fist pumping, but there was even a little dancing (not just jumping up and down). Yes, he got up from behind the rifle and did a little dance, I was just too slow to get on film. Man, I could have been a social media baron!
It was awesome to get my longest hits to date, it really was. Don't let my brother-n-law know, but I'm get more enjoyment from seeing him make hits, and the reactions keep me smiling for days!
Now, how can I get our wives, to let us head off for a Himalayan Tahr hunt next spring? Seeing him take an animal in the mountains, would be unbeatable. And I'd have the camera ready for that.
cheers
