for some reason i have an interest in the older vari x III model...... how ever i cannot seem to find much info on them.. for example when were they released? I read that they were discontinued in 2004?....

second how do they do in low light situations... any experience would be great... has anyone had them modified by leupold thinking about maybe trying to get some open tactical turrets installed..( i know i could get target model and leave cap off, which might be what i do...)... or should i just look for a newer model?

any info/ experience would be great..

thanks, Spike

I no this is what you want so I will not talk you out if it but my experience with the vx line has not been that great. I still have a few left and the problem I always had was the clicks were never positive and some would not hold zero. Glass was just okay but nothing to write home about. There are much better scopes on the market and probably a bit cheaper

I have one that came with a gun I bought.
The glass is a step behind a sightron s111 and it has the slotted click adjustment which doesn’t suit my shooting style. Leupold said they would put a M1 turret for $120.
IMO, there are better scopes out there now.

I have four 2.5X8 variX 111's, and one 6.5X20. The 6.5X20 has had turrets installed by Leupold, the rest are standard and imho perfect for what I do. Barlow

Don't buy any until calling Leupold with the numbers.
Leupold has competed with themselves for so long, putting out endless superfluous versions of the same, that a customer cannot know what they're buying in the brand -unless confirmed by or bought directly from Leupold (custom shop). Watch for counterfeits and year to year revisions (like lens coatings and issue resolutions) also.

I have a 6.5x20-30mm side focus that I had sent to Premier years ago before Premier went out and started making their own scopes. I had the M-1 knobs installed and had a go through. It was always the scope that I would use for my testing of accurate rifles. I had it mounted in a Larue Tactical removable mount. It has done very well for me. It is the standard duplex reticle, which was just thin enough in the center section to aim at bullet holes. I have toyed with selling it, but it has done so well that I would not get what I thought that it was worth.

Place a WTB over on 24Hr Campfire - It's fashionable over there to trash Leupolds and replace with SWFA's.

I've just about talked myself into the Sightron 2.5x10x32 with their hunter hold over reticle. I love the Leupold I have and the hash marks work well with the .223 load I shoot. Well, it works good as long as I judge the range right! I shot over the back of a bobcat this evening that was closer than I thought; but that was my fault.
