Do it yourself Stock making thread

2" would be great for a hunting style or monte carlo stock. With the design I like to make 2" is a tad thin for making a wider forend. You could always order a thin-ish sheet of walnut and laminate that on the outsides too. What does pricey pine look like? tight grain?
It came out of a beam from a factory in Paterson, NJ. Close to where I live. It's old growth yellow pine. It looks nothing like the white pine that big box stores have on their shelves. It's pretty amazing.
I'd like to find some 1/8" purple heart to put in there as well. It would bring my dimension to 2-1/4" which would work for my needs. I'm just not sure where I would find that. I guess I can get some 1/2" or 1/4" and plane it down. I'll have to look into that.
Or maybe I'll find a thicker piece of walnut for the middle... We'll see.

Oh I see that old growth pine is completely different from the tree farm wood at the Blowes and Home Desperate. I think that will work wel, should definitely be stonger and easier to work with. It would be cool to add some other wood to your laminate too, but thats just me.

I've been thinking of doing a curly maple with a purpleheart core laminate to change things up. I found a few pieces of purpleheart on ebay that arent crazy expensive. Otherwise you will have to find a hardwood store near you.

I'm actually quite lucky. I have a really nice lumber store about 20 minutes from me that has pretty much anything I could want.
Except Mesquite...

Well lucky you lol. I wish I had that. The closest one to me that has anything worth buying is 2 hour drive. I have a few local spots for normal lumber but fancier stuff is hard to come by near me.

I just got off the phone with them. The girl was relatively clueless but very nice.

They typically have most things. I'll take a ride tomorrow morning and see what I see. I have a nice piece of walnut for the center section but am willing to forgo it if I can find something that can add just a bit more thickness without breaking the bank.
I have also considered adding carbon fiber. I'm just not sure I'm ready for that yet.
This stock will be shot off a bipod. I'm hoping to use it for FTR, not this season but possibly next. We'll see how it goes.
Enjoy the day. It's off to do hair!

So I made a mistake today and started a second coat of Tung oil too soon after the previous coat while sanding in, and now I have spots where the Tung oil/sanding dust mixture left gummy deposits over the walnut. Any ideas on how to remove these without tons of sanding? Very frustrated with myself....[/

Try some MEK (methyl ethyl ketone).

Try a rag soaked in paint thinner. Works for me. A quality scraper will do it too, but be gentle.

Yes 1/2” up cut spiral router bit. It was the very first cuts I made while the it was still a full blank. Then cut barrel channel.

Paid $50 for the blank. I was hoping for it to sand up prettier. Oh well. It’s for a Tikka 695 in 338 Win Mag for a kid that wanted a boomer. I cut off some of the mag well area on this one. The forend is 3” wide and I added a fixture to hold the TRG bipod. He likes them, too. The fixture was made by 230grRN on here. He did a fine job machining it out of aluminum for me. It’s screwed and epoxied into the stock.
