LRP or SRP??

shopping brass for .22 creedmoor

i still dont see or understand the advantage of small primer pockets over the large.

please tell pro's and con's

I have been told under 35 gr of powder will burn better with Srp and over-with Large Rifle Primer...makes sense...it was from test Lapua or Norma did, I think...

Indeed the small rifle brass does last MUCH longer (I am on my 25th firing of 200 cases annealing necks every 4-5 firings with near max loads). The concept was requested by the USA Palma Team some decades ago as a way to make it easier to work up loads in their rifles. Remington used to make .308 small rifle cases for benchrest but that ended some time ago. Lapua was first to reintroduce it and I feel makes an excellent product. My SDs with SRP run about 5-7fps while my slightly reduced LRP (Wolf/Tula) loads run about 10fps at the same velocity. I drop the load .3 gr. for large primers. As far as shooting results I can't tell much definitive difference on target as long as both loads use similar velocities when shooting with coat and sling. Even benched one can make the case for either one.

I have tested both in a 260 with identical loads. SRP cut the sd in half with a decrease in velocity of about 25fps.

It's really simple, the SRP brass lasts a LOT longer...like 30 reloads instead of 10...as Mr. Sculley said. I tested SDs for both and there was no difference in a 308 case. Translation, same accuracy and way more brass life with SRP. Only time LRP gets the nod is for hunting in cold weather.
I and others have got over 40 reloads on 308 cases. Max loads, too.

Minimal full length sizing makes that happen.

I have had Federal small rifle primers with delayed firing. A few tenths second in 30 degree F temperatures. Remington 7.5 small rifle primers fired normally (instantly). That's with firing pin springs about 10% stronger than spec of 23 pounds, pin tip stopped protruding .065" past bolt face and .002" case head clearance.

Since it can get "bitter COLD", here in Idaho, I'll stay with, LR Primers for my .243 Win Tikka w/ Rem Brass.
I do have one question tho,.. does anyone "KNOW" if, Magnum LRP's "tighten up" group's and SD's, in a 6mm/.243 class cart. ??
i use 40+ grains of IMR 4350 or, N-160 with, 80-90 grain Bullets,.. thought's ? Currently, my CCI 200's, produce .25-.5 MOA groups, w/ 80 Sierra #1515 and 87 V-Maxes, shooting the LOW accuracy "Node" in both loads. I do know that, using the F-215's over, a LR Winchester brand Mag Primer, "tightened up" my .270 WSM Groups, using 65 grains of IMR 7828 from just MOA, to about .5 to .6 MOA ( now getting, 1.25", Ctr. to Ctr. groups,.. at 200 Yards) for the 140 AccuBond.

When I work through my pile of 210m primers I’ll be making the switch to SRP. In the mean time I’ll continue suffering with Lapua .308 getting loose after 7-8 firings

This topic gets asked ONLY, about every other week, do the "search " thing OR,

READ and reread,.. the 7th to 10th Paragraph of, this Article,.. VERY carefully, Guys/ Gals ! And, YES,.. Small RP's, are fine, in LONG Barreled, "Target" Rifles for, those trying to achieve MAX Velocities and good case life,.. in "descent", weather ! When Elk Hunting, in Northern Arizona in early Dec. I was very, VERY, happy, to have Fed 215's, "lighting off", my 65 grains of IMR 7828 load as, the Ammo was, DAMP/ COLD, in the 7*- 25* weather for, the first, 4 Days of the Hunt AND YUP, it went,.."BOOM" !

Idaho-Lefty makes a good point. Hunting and cold weather loads are different and must be loaded with that objective in mind. Might want to waterproof the rounds as well.
