220 Swift

Saw a Ruger 77 220 Swift today at a flea market, blue action with stainless barrel that was stamped .Ruger. Could it have been a Rebarrel by Ruger?
I must look stupid he said that you could not wear a stainless barrel out, I said ok and he further informed me the guy he got it from said he was pushing bullets from 4400 to 4600 with no issues.
Is that possible?
I didn't bite price wasn't too bad but I walked away enlightened.

I walked away.

I think you made the right choice.

Unless you know the gun and who it's coming from buying used hot rods, like a 220 Swift, can be a risk and unless you get it really cheap or you don't mind taking a chance, "I walked away" can often put you time and money ahead.

If, in fact they were pushing that fast, anything past a few hundered rounds, that barrel is toast.

I thought that was really pushing the limit anyway there are some real expert gun dealers out there. I'm not an expert but not an idiot either, most time I just walk away can't argue with idiots they will over power you with experience.
Thanks

Handi , there were two early Wood Stocked Ruger M77 Factory Swifts . A Varminter 26 inch Barrel and a Sporter 24 inch Barrel . I had both at one time and oddly the Sporter was more accurate . It would have been interesting to examine that Bore if the Seller was remotely truthful .

What was he asking for it and did you notice if it was a "Centennial" model? They were stamped "Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty". I had one for many years and sold it a few years ago. It was very accurate. 4400 fps doable with 40-45gr bullets. I still have my standard weight 77 with a Douglas barrel. I will never be without one. Barlow

Go back with a bore scope and ask him to take a quick peak. I realize you probably do not have one and the seller would likely not understand anyway but the thought of it seems funny to me. I am only saying this for entertainment purposes and not to offend.
You would need to buy it for the value of the action and components and assume the barrel is shot or would very soon be shot and need to be replaced.

Those velocities may be possible with 30-40gr bullets that were moly coated. You should have told him you expected 4800 fps minimum and it was to slow for you then walked off.

Strikes me as a bit of bovine excrement. I have never seen a factory M77 with a mix of stainless and blue, but maybe they exist. Stainless will most definitely wear and if pushed to the velocities he claims, will wear out quickly. Good decision to walk.

I have a brand new Ruger American from Whittakers with a blued receiver and stainless barrel. Seems Ruger will do dealer specials nowadays.

He was asking $675.00 it had some odd looking scope mounts on the barrel , looked like a block of some sort about 4" from the receiver. No Ruger rings.I don't remember seeing anything about it being an anniversary model.
This all took place at the flea market in Belleview FL

I stand corrected. Thanks, though I am so seldom wrong it can be excused! :D

Those would be for vintage Unertl or Lyman target spot.

The first year that Ruger came out with the target model with the laminated stock, it had a blued receiver and stainless barrel.

Good to know. Never saw one. My late 1990s Ruger Varmint/Target (or maybe Target/Varmint. .can't remember) had a laminated stock and all metal (barrel, action, floor plate and trigger guard) was a bead-blasted pewter gray stainless. Bought new so wasn't a re-do.
