7 SAUM vs 284win

What would you get with a 7 saum over a 284? They both "will keel".

How much shorter is the 7 saum vs 284 for a short action?

Barrel life way different?

Same, Same, but 284 brass is better if you use Lapua.
7SAUM is great, except the brass.
Both benefit from long actions too.

ADG, out of Elizabethtown, KY is now offering 7SAUM brass and it is in stock. I've not heard anything bad about their brass but it odes appear to be expensive; maybe more than Lapua 6.5-284 brass.
If I were to build either it would be a minimum 8.5 twist and a long action. There are just too many excellent heavy for caliber bullets out there now to take advantage of.
IMO, having owned and shot one with great results, I would choose the 7WSM over either of the two you're looking at but the brass situation there is so incredibly difficult it moves a fine cartridge way down the list of consideration for the fast sevens.

Thats my issue with 300 wsm too... brass... if I cant get good brass it aint worth it.

Norma 300 wsm brass is phenomenal. Most benchrest and fclass guys use it. Primer pockets are super tight and brass is very consistent

You'll get better velocity from the ultra mag and less barrel life if pushing those numbers. Accuracy won't be quite as good ( in the 7 saum )if your looking for a competitive rifle for matches and you'll get beat up a bit more. Brass isn't as good and like the above comments, a LA will benefit you in both cartridges depending on what your use for them. Think I'd look at the 7 WSM if I were going Short magnum. 284 win = 2.170" case
7 saum = 2.035" case
7 WSM = 2.100" case

There’s Bertram 7mm WSM brass available now along with several other hard to find cases. https://bertrambrass.com/
They were in stock just a few days ago but are out at the moment. Bertram is making these cases regularly unlike most other brass makers so they shouldn’t be out of stock long.

I have a 7mm SAUM in a short action with the wyatts box and have loaded to 2.950”. Has been accurate for me (more of a hunting, long range plinker build) kinda like a 6BR on steroids:

Current brass options: Norma, Nosler, Bertram, ADG.
Always wanted to build a 284 and still may do so someday but the extra .135” case length limits you in a SA. I think 284 in strictly a competition gun is hard to beat. I always had concerns on getting a 284 to feed ok in a repeater but never messed around with it enough to know. I’ve gotten the SAUM to feed after tinkering with it.
IMO don’t like the shorter neck length on the 7 WSM.
Would think you would get a few hundred more rounds barrel life out of a 284.

Talked to Bertram Brass and they’re expecting a bunch of WSM brass next week or so.

IF I ever burn out, my .270 WSM bbl. I'd re-barrel with,.. the 7mm-.270 WSM
Should fit in short/ medium, Actions OK and has a longer Neck than, the 7mm WSM ( 7WSM is almost, Obsolete !) and the Canadians are loving it for, 1,000 yard Competition.
