Your thoughts: weighing Garand charges?

Using Imr4064 and 168SMKs in 30-06, would you weigh charges, or just throw them for 200 yd competition using unaccurized Garand?

The SR is a huge target. As Issued Garand. Throw it.

Sort of a different take and this is what i do for stuff I am not trying to eck out the last little bit of accuracy. I throw the charge and then put it on the scale and weigh it. If it is my desired charge +/- maybe .2 gn then in the case it goes. This weeds out the off throw where powder got hung up etc.

I might add this is what I do with my Garand loading

.308 ammo straight out of a 650xl, using the not-especially-precise Dillon powder measure is easily capable of cleaning the 600 yard sling target. .30-06 would be no different.
My Dillon produced 200 yard load, using 46 Varget, and 125 Speer TNT’s, shoots well inside 1 MOA, at 200 yards, in every rifle I’ve tried it in..5, I believe.

Throw the charge because the Garand will occasionaly "throw" a shot. For some unknown reason!

4 most common causes are:

* op rod not fit to go back into battery exactly the same for each shot.

* bumping the in battery op rod with the heel of your hand "to make sure it is solid in place."

* out of square reloaded case head in worst possible fit to out of square bolt face.

* poor 5 pound trigger mangement.

weighing charges for that rifle for that type of shooting is a colossal waste of time. As long as you use good bullets, you are going to maximizing the potential of the rifle with thrown charges anyhow. BUt, the key is, have fun! WOnt hurt to weigh if you just have tons of spare time, but certainly no need to do so.

Yes, admittedly I do like talking about my favorite pastime. You got me! Also, I like hearing from others that weighing charges is a waste time with the Garand. I've come to respect many on this site, and I find their advice valuable.

Weighing charges helps get better accuracy in any rifle by reducing velocity spread. Whether or not one can tell the difference is something else.

If I owned a professionally accurized M1 that would consistently shoot sub-MOA 8-round groups, I would probably weigh powder charges and drop them into Lapua brass, then seat my bullets with a Wilson hand-die and arbor press. For the 600-yard line only. Unless I had way too much free time on my hands, and nothing else worthwhile to do.

Right on the money,all depends on the skill of the shooter and how well the gun shoots . In my opinion if the shooter does not feel confident in his rifle to weigh charges it is a colossal waste of time shooting the thing .
