PTG bolt nose concentricity problems!

Hey guys just an FYI,

I have had quite a few PTG bolts come through the shop for fluting over the years. Lately, I have seen 3 bolts with the bolt nose concentricity off so far as to be noticeable by eye. Measured a friends bolt and bolt nose wall thickness was off by more than .030 from one side to the other!! What the hell is going on at PTG? Not sure if they are aware of this or not but definitely something to watch out for!! Just sad at this point for PTG.:eek:o_O

I tried to tell them back in April after I had to spend a Saturday afternoon sleeving the face of one on a completed rifle that had been DLC'd. A go-gauge is loose enough that it would move out of the way, but it wouldn't chamber brass. I got the typical PTG response from some manager, but only after 4-5 phone calls. Dave nor anybody else bothered to pick up the phone or return a message the first several times. Basically It was my fault because I should checked run-out on their part before I used it, or assembled the rifle, test fired it with live ammo, and then dissasembled it again for coating. Oh, and mistakes on their end are rare, so there's no need to address anything further.

I don't know how much business they are doing but when a company adopts a 'devil may care' attitude regarding quality control and customer complaints, the obvious answer is 'Too much'.

That is some crazy stuff right there! Bazaar to say the least.:confused:

Thanks for the heads up. I have one PTG bolt in a rifle, but bought it about 8 years ago. No issues.

As far as current PTG quality goes, this is a PTG bottom metal I just received a couple weeks ago. Locks mags in nicely and appears to be machined well, but when I looked at the included action screws, the first thought thru my mind was WTF!? I mean seriously, is a little attention to detail so hard these days?

What does say about their reamers?

I too am done with the company. I ordered 3 reamers this year and two of the three were either bad or not the correct reamer. One reamer ringed every chamber I cut right out of the box which required ordering a Manson and set back on barrels to fix the problem. The other reamer came wrong and was sent back the same day which I still have not seen.

Fool me once...
This is the last year I ever use their products again and as stated above anybody who wants to use anything from PTG will get the disclaimer that it is on them with no guarantee or warranty.

I've installed a dozen of these lately (1 piece) with no issues. I pulled out my inventory and they all look good. --Jerry

Sent a 6 SLR reamer back to PTG to Have reground into a 6 Creedmoor. Somehow my reamer got broke and they are now grinding a totally new reamer. Now 6 weeks out instead of 2.

They have been this way for some years now. Too bad. They have some good ideas but without a crew to match they can not keep QC up. Their assembly process is too Henry Ford-like for precision anything according to the gunsmiths I know who have visited their plant.

So. Hex head screws for pan head holes. I suppose YOU were supposed to re-mill the holes?

not douting anybodys observations, but what machining operation would allow for the bolt nose to not run concentric to the bolt body
you would think the body, OD of the lugs and the nose would all be turned in one operation
then a second op in a jig on a machining center to mill the sides of the lugs and the bolt handle etc

Had same issue, go you know what caused your rings? I couldnt see any reason sent it to Manson he wouldnt work on it but didnt/couldnt tell me why it left rings? Ptg did replace it, but havent tried the new one.

Just a thought, but there has to be a center to support the bolt body during machining. That would be right where the bolt face would be. I would venture the bolt face counterbore is done in a second or third op. Some runout in the set up and there you go! Purely speculation on my part but I have measured this problem on 3 bolts so far. For someone not fully trained on the operation they are performing this is not that big of a stretch. Lack of proper training can go sideways very easily in a machine shop. Seen it, and have dodged the flying pieces more than once!! Lol!! :D:eek:o_O

But .030". Something went haywire. Maybe they have fixed it because just today they posted a large increase in the price of 1 pc bolts. :(
