Deep creek and Glacier park

Whats the best month to shoot a monthly deep creek 1000 match and get to see Glacier Park without getting into roads closed due to winter? My options are March, April and June only this year. O yea and avoiding the peak crowds, I know that’s not asking much. Thanks Troy

That's asking a lot. Hard to say. The Park will still have a ton of snow in March and April. May can be a toss up. June or July is your best bet, but crowds will be big. August might be a bust if we have a bad fire season.

If it means anything, my favorite time in Northwest Montana for weather has always been from 3rd week of May to the end of June. Beautiful weather and the fishing is AMAZING with all the spring spawns. Spring small mouth bass fishing is off the charts if you know where and when to go. Same with the Spring Northern Pike spawn

All I know is we left Many Glacier on the east side on the 15th of September. They said the Lodge and shops would be closing the next week to be winterized for the winter. We have been there three times now in the first two weeks of September and there were no crowds and beautiful fall scenery. That country has been having fires that time of year and it can change your plans, but there’s always something different to see.

I’ve been camping in Glacier a couple times. One time was in June. They were started on clearing the snow on Going To The Sun Rd, but were told it doesn’t usually open until July. The following year we went out by Amtrak in July. If you want to see the middle of the park, July and August are your best chance.

I would go in either May or June. Preferably June, there's some years when even in May you can't get to all of Glacier from snow.

Been there in September and the fires were a major problem. Much of the park closed because of danger and smoke. I would shoot for May myself before the crowds become too thick.

Alot of times going to the sun road doesn't even open until first part of July. I've seen it snow every month except August in the 26 years I've lived in Montana

with the options you have June would be your best, and its still not smoken hot at deep Creek Missoula we would love to have you at one of our monthly shoots.

+1 for this. My wife and I were there 2 years ago in June and couldn't get through the road to the sun. Don't let that stop you though. It's beyond beautiful. Peek crowds are not nearly as large as Yellowstone.

Yep, we get our first snowfall in September every year, as in actual inches on the ground. I have seen snow in August in the mountains, just not the valley. Got to like the cold weather here.

I am ok with cold, I actually prefer it over heat and humidity at least here I do. I need to get back out there and learn how to shoot from you guys and hang out in that country! We had a great time last year.

Just as an aside, while Going to the Sun may not be open in June (usually isn't!), US Highway 2 around the south side of the park is still a pretty awesome drive. Good chance to see country that many miss because they are focused on Glacier.
If you can make it an overnight trip, go up from Missoula to somewhere around Glacier, then back down the east side of the rocky mountain front through Choteau and Lincoln back to Missoula. Totally worth it.

Thanks for the info, we will look into this. Troy
