Update on WY & CO antelope hunts

I normally hunt antelope near Douglas WY each year. This year would be slightly different, in that I was taking a friend from the range where I shoot. He had never had taken a big game animal.

So we headed up to Douglas on Tuesday and started hunting that afternoon. He had applied for 2 doe/fawn tags, and I had 1 "any" antelope and 2 doe/fawn tags. His first stalk was successful and I started teaching him how to skin and quarter where they hit the ground. It is the way I have to do elk and moose.

Next morning I filled 1 of my doe/fawn tags, and a little later took a buck. He filled his second doe/fawn tag around noon time. Since I did most of the work skinning and quartering, my back was about wore out. So we just watched the rest of the afternoon. The next morning I had plenty of chances to fill my last tag, but decided not to. Wind was blowing 35 mph and rain was coming off the mountains. Se we headed home.

This morning I went out with my CO antelope buck tag. It was 35 degrees, wind blowing rain sideways, so not much fun to be out. At 7:22 I filled my tag with a smaller buck.

I will be headed back to Douglas in 8 days to fill my last antelope tag, attempt to find the mule deer for my general tag, and fill my 2 whitetail doe/fawn tags. Sure do enjoy the benefits of retirement!

I will share pictures of my friends first antelope, the horns from my WY antelope, and the antelope I got this morning in CO.

Very nice to take a friend out for his 1st goat.

I think I enjoyed him taking it, more than any I have ever taken. It was a blind stalk in, so I stayed back on top a hill so he could see me, and I directed him in. Once he crawled up to the top of the overlook, it was just a spectator sport for me. On his second one, he learned the hard way why I emphasized to stay out of the shoulder bones.

What cartridge/bullet were you using? What happened when he hit the shoulder bone. Please give us some details. Thanks......
