Billet Ammo Caddy

About 6 months ago I talked about doing something like this and just got busy with work. Thinking about revisiting this project.

I am curious if any of you would be interested in something like this. I try to develop products that I myself would want, and I hate the plastic ammo caddies that I currently use.

Benefits of this design would be that it would be anodized 6061 aluminum, sealed with an o-ring to keep dirt/dust/moisture out, no broken plastic latch to deal with. Mine would have a really trick billet push button. I haven't decided if I would do custom engraving. It just takes a lot of time and it effects lead time. I was thinking an American flag engraved on the lid? Maybe the site name/logo if I get approval? Open to suggestions here.

Still working on the design, but I plan on making the interior tray removable so you could swap it out for different sized trays for different calibers. I may have to cap the bullet length to 3.25" COAL.

I'll include a render of what I imagine it looking like. The hinge system isn't modeled in yet, just FYI.

Thoughts? The parts to make it are pretty pricey. Price would be around $175 give or take. If it isn't something you guys are interested in @ that price point and it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I'd rather know now than do all the coding then find out.

Thanks all,

How many pounds will it weigh when full of ammo? Slick looking design, though.

That would depend on the ammo that is in the box. 223, 308, etc.. I don't have a final weight on the box since I am still designing it. 1-2lbs is my guess. Trying to get it as light as possible.

Just weighed an MTM old style 50rd. box full with 180gr. .30-06 cartridges. Was 3.5 lbs.

Nope ... not interested. Many more things to spend money on in this hobby/sport. I do really like the looks but too spendy for what it does ‘for me’.

My wife likes to buy me neat things like this. Christmas IS coming. So, yeah, I'd be interested if you can ship one for under $200.
Would they all be the same color anodizing?

I may be interested. Id want a flag on the lid- dont care nothing about a website engraved on it. I dont think the removable inside is necessary unless you included a few sizes.

The removable inside is so you wouldn't have to buy a box for every caliber size. Simply swap the tray. Easier/cheaper for everybody.

This is what I thought a caddy was. Gotta load each relay but has the timer which is handy on switchie days

Ammo box, case guard...etc. heck if I know what to call it.

I'll probably build a couple. I want a few for myself, so I may as well make a few extra.

You're absolutely right, Sonny. Please don't base your production - or even make blanks - based on the response you get on this site.

I've been making handmade 15 round, high-end burl, laminated, and hardwood cartridge blocks for about 20 years for my own use in IBS Score Benchrest competition. Very labor intensive effort, especially the finish work and clear-coating. Along the way I sold a few to friends, who urged me a number of times to make some to sell. I finally took their advice and made up about a half dozen. I went on the "General Topics" Forum, posted photos, and gave a little background on them. The response was great with more than a few posters interested in buying.

Fast forward - I moved the effort to the classifieds, re-posted photos and prices, and sold exactly one (1) block. And, even that was not a 15 round, but a custom 25 round one. After a few weeks and no further responses, I took the ad down. Lesson learned: A good idea-product is not necessarily a profitable one and/or worth the effort.

Now - if you are determined to do this, just make a few for a widely used case diameter (.473" maybe) and put them in the classifieds. It won't take long to find out if can sell enough to make it worthwhile. Worst case - you'll end up with them for your own use. Good luck.

In other industries I have found that everybody who is so gung-ho for you to build them product disappears after the bill comes. I haven't experienced that much with the rifle crowd so I really value what everybody has to say. If they say it's a bad idea...it probably is.

Appreciate the response.

I must have missed the ones Chris made. I tend to agree with his notion that they are a low volume pride in ownership piece of kit.

That said, I have a homely, but very functional gray translucent plastic 50 round box that is a #509 small rifle (iirc) that measures approximately 6" long by3.25" deep by 3" wide. I haul 6 Dasher loaded ammunition (with 105gr Bergers) around in it.

Geez, this would be a step up...

Have Mamma get you one of these for Christmas instead of underwear/socks/aftershave.
