Front rest upgrade decision, please help

First, I’d like to say I enjoy this forum and thanks to all who have been helpful with my desire to shoot more and more accurately. I glean a lot from posts and threads that I rarely respond to, so I appreciate it.

Well, it’s time to upgrade my front rest. I currently have a Caldwell Rock BR. The windage threading has been cleaned up a bit and it has the rear speed screw. It’s ok, but it has too much “slop or looseness” for my liking. Also, when my rifle free recoils, it doesn’t return to point of aim whatsoever-this may be my fault though.

I’d like to get a rest with the coaxial joystick or something more refined as I think it would be a step in the right direction.

I don’t shoot competitively in matches, maybe against friends but mostly just me trying to do my best and get better each time at the bench. I do not forsee myself ever shooting matches.

Should I:

Go with a Shadetree top mounted on my Caldwell base?
Go with a Sinclair competition rest?
Go with a Seb mini?
Go with the bigger dawg Seb rest?
Go with something I’ve never thought about?

Currently use a Protektor rear bag with cordura ears. Heavy sand.

Honestly, as always I’d like to spend the least amount of money, but I also don’t mind paying for quality. I also don’t like waiting, but if it’s the right decision...I’ll try to wait patiently.

Thanks for your advice and help.

Before you spend more money on equipment, is your stock straight enough to track in a straight line?

Edit: The simple Bald Eagle rest will serve you quite well. The only advantage a coaxial rest top offers is speed. Since you are not competing, speed is not necessary.

For your stated use i would go with the Seb Mini. I have a Seb Max and wouldn't be with out it & i am on the list for the Mini for a 2nd. rest for range trips with the Grandkids................

Regards
Rick

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the ones mentioned
I think I would go with the shadetree
I like it better then my sinclair but the sinclair is made well to.

I think heavier rest are more stable. I have a Randolph. It's good but I'd love to have a Farley ( or seb joystick maybe.)
Not the mini.
A bald eagle isn't much more than a rock, imo. The cable windage is jumpy, there's a fix ppl do.
The Sinclair is a good one, imo

Great question, and I’m almost certain it is straight enough. The rifle in question is a Panda glued into McMillan stock.

Also, I’ve had a bald eagle. One with and one without the cable connection. This Rock BR is about the same in my opinion.

Looks like the least expensive option is to get a Shadetree rest. Would the base I have now be sufficient?

Pulpit
I’ll send you a pm with my number. I have a few shade tree tops on the bald eagles (brand new)at the shop. I’ll let you know prices for either just the top or the complete set up. Butch ... the inventer/manufacture of the shade tree is one heck of a guy and produces a fantastic product. You can’t go wrong with a shade tree!

Thanks
Darrin

For my type of bench shooting...Informal, sighting in and working up loads the Bald Eagle Iron Slingshot with a Shadetree top is the cat's meow. If I remember correctly the Slingshot itself is 20+ lbs.

I shoot for fun and do not compete, but i still try to duplicate what the competing shooters are doing. I got a Rock Br and did some minor machining to tighten it up for a minor amount of dollars. Having access to a machine shop did help. I still thought i had to have a top notch brand. Luckily a friend got one and let me use it for a period of time. For me speed was better, but i really did not need speed. The groups that did matter, in the low 1's and 2's did not change. This was just my observation, not a scientific test.
