Revenge

Ok, a month ago I'm on a roll taking three ghogs in row under tough conditions, high hay, hogs bobbing up and down requiring me to time the shots, obscure profiles but I got all three at 205 to 227 yards. :) I'm a real Daniel Boone! :p By the way one of the hogs was a monster male, largest one I've shot in many years.

It's late in the day, 7.30 ish. I've moved to another brush line where I know there is an active hole. One comes rolling out shortly thereafter. There's a slight rise and while not perfect, I have the best profile of the day. A crawler in full body view. The distance is 181 yards. Well within my range with my 223 Rem Weatherby Super V. Easy shot right? Sure kill right?

I get a good position on my sticks, place the cross hairs behind the shoulder and send the 55 Nolser BT. I missed! How do you make three longer, more difficult shots then miss the easiest shot of the day?? Old age? Over confidence? Lack of attention to fundamental details? All three I suspect. I'm not Daniel Boone - I disillusioned.

Fast forward to yesterday. I'm on a mission. I had to wait until the farmer made the next cut of hay for a revenge hunt. It's as hot as Hades but I'm on a mission. Wifey thinks I'm nuts going hunting in this heat - well she's use to being married to a ghog fanatic.

I'm not seeing a single hog from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The ghogs are clearly smarter than me, I mean what kind of nut case would be in a field with the heat index near 100. Anyway I set up at the same location where I missed that one a month ago. It's now late in the day, 7:00PM or so. At about 7:30 he rolls out for an evening sack. I have a good crawler profile. I send the 55 Nosler BT. I crush him! Revenge hunt mission successful. ;)

Good write up Daniel.

I have had a pretty durn good Summer here smokin Ghogs, crows, and misc vermin with jacked up cast bullet loads out of tuned factory rigs.Met,and exceeded acc/vel goals in several rigs.

Was visiting an old hunting partner from 25 years ago last weekend. He's been married now all that time and finally is at that point that his wife would just as soon him be out of the house,hunting..... booya! He's sitting on way too much property.Although not ideal Ghog territory, it ain't bad neither. But he has a coyote issue. They're not playing nice with the turkey and deer on the property.

He has a good group of guys that live to wack deer on the place. A cpl book deer come of there pretty much every year.Interestingly I was loading a cpl rigs last Saturday a.m. to make the 1 hr 10 minute drive over, under the watchful eye of 8-10 deer standing 50 yds away..... deer hunting just isn't a problem. So,ain't going to his place to haul dead deer back to my place?

Long story short. The one hog I missed this year was all on me.Not really a jerk as in flinch but definitely pulled the Savage #16 223 to the right enough to cleanly miss a,"put it right between his eyes" shot. So we're setting up an iron sighted armalite 223 for him when I noticed my own group with the #16. Off shooting sticks with a 2 1/2# trigger,my groups "tend" to go right on a 10+ shot group. Have serious BR capabilities here, right out the shop door so shooting and practice is a daily thing. Age,familiarity, less than ideal conditions.... and I found a "hitch in the swing". So field work is critical within the practice envelope.

It took me a while before I became proficient off the sticks. I try to get in a practice session twice a week but the range I shoot at only goes out to 200 yards. One thing I did learn was that my rifles shoot to a different point of impact off the sticks versus the bench. Also you must adhere to all the good shooting fundamentals to make consistent shots especially at the longer ranges.

Great posts....but they're always better with photos!

Agree - maybe next year I'll join the 21th century - I used a slide rule in college - I'm a dinosaur - still shoot only revolvers when it comes to pistol, only bolts when it come to rifle, and a 12 gauge double barrel when it come to shotguns. However I sure wished I'd taken a picture of the big male - he was giant - biggest one I've gotten in years. "It's no country for old hogs" where I hunt.:)
