specifically the tactical heavy class has anybody tried an m1a in there yet? Also in this class is any configuration legal such as any chassis on any gas gun? Im an m1a guy myself and everybody knows that so ive had a few of the m1a customers and fans ask me

I think the only restrictions are less than 3,200 FPS

And 30 cal or less

Other than that I think you can pretty well do whatever you want

I shot a match last year with my M1a against entire field of bolt rifles. The rifle performed better than I did. I wasn't prepared only having shot over 600 yards the week prior and unsure of dopes out to 1000. It is still my favorite rifle to shoot. Good luck. Scott

They have "Gas Gun Series". Different course of fire and different scoring. They use time and score, more like long range 3gun. You could shoot a local PRS match with your M1a for fun. But if you think you're gonna shoot an M1a at a national PRS match, you will get your ass handed to you. Don't kid yourself. This sport is a discipline. You don't see people shoot M1a in BR of F-Class do you? If you really want to shoot a PRS match, bring you're most accurate rifle with your best scope and learn to shoot from barricades read the wind w/o flags.

There are really no "classes" in PRS. You shoot with everyone in "Open". There is kinda 308/223 class but no one is in it. Same with "Production Class".

You are right, far fewer participants in the "Tactical" class. Everyone would rather run a revved up 6 or a Creedmoor.

I don't judge Anyway you choose to live your life is fine by me. All kidding aside, I do wish they could segment classes better. Unfortunately I got thrown in the deep end of the pool early and never looked back. Our last national PRS match in Colorado we had one Production Class shooter and nobody in 223/308.

I think most people end up wanting to score higher and hit more targets and to hell with the classes. I started at the bottom like most most people, and practice and participation more than gear or caliber selection is why I started to improve. Flat calibers help, nice tripods help, but practice helps most.

Several yrs ago I built a 6SLR with ever intention of shooting some PRS matches, but it never happened. Now I'm actually taking the time to shoot it. I looked at the classes and decided to screw the 308 barrel back on it. I can run 178s at a little under the speed limit where they shoot well with a 22" barrel, and it is manageable with a can.

Really, you need to carry a tripod for these things? I've seen the videos where the guys look like they are in a multicam Stay-puff Marshmallow man costume (or they stole all the pillows from the motel). Tripods too!? Gear is cool and all but seriously.

To the OP. I don't think that an M1A is going to be competitive against the large frame ARs in that game because of the limits on the gas system, and you have a big chunk of moving metal on the right side to get hung up playing barricade games and limiting the ways that you can use bags for support. I'm not an M1A guy, and I'm sure that a good builder could custom build one for running revved up 6.5s or 6mm loads, but for the $$ and effort you'd probably be better off with something built on a Stoner platform.

Run that M1A till you shoot that barrel out. Then do what i do "Make fun of everyone else running a mouse caliber gun" then complain about how 308win shoots like a pirate cannon. Then clean some stages and finish in the top 10.

Those guys don't actually shoot. They just buy gear, type run-on sentences and bitch a lot.

The idea or issue with gear is that it helps. As you get better it can help your score. You can leave those points on the table or you can buy the gear and practice with it to pick up extra points. Sometimes it does look silly, but sometimes it feels good to make those hits.

Generally speaking the people at these matches are good people (just like every shooting discipline), many would likely give you the shirt off their back, or in this case, loan you their tripod and bag

If someone was going to shoot the "Gas Gun Series" a 223 AR would work fine. Way better than any M1a. I also firmly believe in the "Show up and Shoot!" theory. Don't worry about what the perfect gear is. Go shoot and have fun. If you really like it, the gear pretty much buys itself.

People forget to have fun. If your into PRS for money and glory then buy and shoot the best equipment you can afford. A well built custom bolt gun/scope is going to be more accurate all day long. If your just out to play, shoot whatever you want. If your playing on this website chances are you have more than one gun to shoot. I like the challenge of shooting an auto over any/all my precision rifles. Good luck and remember to have fun that why we started shooting to begin with. Scott

my understanding is theres a seperate class for the 308 called heavy tactical and thats what he asked about. if it was me doing it and if they had some matches around me i'd love to try it but id have the right tool for the job- a bolt action and a big assortment of sandbags.

I am currently prepping for the Cowtown Clash PRS Gas Gun Event.

Gas Gun PRS is quickly becoming my favorite activity. I've spent the better part of the past year, trying to find 'my niche' in the shooting sports.

My favorite parts of each sport.. oddly come together in Gas PRS.

Cant make a supressor only match. What else is around that area?

In PRS your bolt has to be open or a fired round in the chamber when you change gun positions as I understand it. How do they handle that rule with a semi auto?

Usually it is "Safety On" while moving.

Yup. Our gas guns in our matches have to say safe on or safety before moving. It usually wont get you DQd just as some guys forget to keep the bolt open before moving.
