I will start with what I know on this one. AR15 platform has been made in just about every caliber and twist rate we can fit into the magazine well. Fast twist rates are better for shooting subsonic loadings out of for greater stability while traveling through the suppressor. 300 blk cartridge is made for this exact example.
What I don't know is can a M1A be re-barreled with a 8 or 9 twist barrel in order to get greater stability with subsonic ammo and still be able to do two things.
1 shoot medium weight match ammo such as the 175 grn sierra or Berger.
2 not affect the gas system negatively by changing dwell time or pressure to an extent that an adjustable gas plug couldn't handle the tuning.
Of course if I was to set up a barrel for shooting very heavy bullets on a regular base wouldn't I also have the ability to move up to the 180 class projectiles as well since I would already be shooting 200 grain sierra's with trailboss?
I have already suppressed my M1A but do not shoot subsonic out of it for fear that the 12 or 11 twist barrel will not stabilize heavier rounds without giving me baffle strikes. This is more of a question to help me decide if going to a new barrel would be worth it. Things I like about getting a new barrel is I would go to the 18 inch medium weight barrel to reduce the amount of thin profile before getting to the can, I never felt comfortable hanging a can off of a barrel that thin especially for sustained fire. I would already be changing twist to a 10 when going to the shorter barrel as well that is if I decide to do this.
Any feed back to any of my ideas or questions is appreciated as is links to articles regarding this. Members here always have links to the neatest reads on the web.
