.338 snipetac

I am starting this thread to hopefully pull some up to date info on the .338 snipetac since many posts and threads are years old. I think with current and soon to be on the market bullets this cartridge will become more popular.

My build: 338 snipetac
Built by Dallas at Lane Precision
Built on a BAT c.t. slightly customized to help with idaho hunting weight limits.
-32" rock creek barrel with a terminator t4 brake.
-McMillan at with carbon shell.
-Evolution bi pod and mount.
-Nightforce nxs with titanium 6 screw rings.

Firing bertram factory brass
Berger 300 grain otm's
Federal 215m

So far h50bmg, will be trying the 20n29, not excited but may try the 869.

Any suggestions on powder? So far this rifle has about 20 rounds through it all on virgin brass. We have ran up to 3180 fps with 138 grains of the h50bmg. Will start running formed brass and see the difference also the barrel will speed up so wondering what velocity this may show.

We are really anticipating the berger 330 or 329 grain that has been talked about as well as the possible 325 grain smk.20180724_201155.jpg

RL-50 is another option.

I run a 338AM
Prepped Bertram brass
300 OTM's
Fed 215
142gr H50bmg
3250fps
32" lilja bbl

It will run faster but accuracy and brass life are great where it's at now.

338 Big Baer on a CT model 310 action with a 30" Bartlein 1-9" twist barrel.

140gr H 50BMG and a Fed 215m gives 3180fps in Bertram brass with a 300gr OTM. It can go faster but it shoots well and brass has 6 firings and still holding up great.

Same load in a 20" Lilja barreled specialty pistol on a BAT action gives 2870fps.

338 A.M. with Bertram Brass. Fed 215, 300 gr. Berger Hybrid OTM, 36" Lilja on a BAT 2.00 model "L" - Ran both H50BMG (142.0 gr) and RL-50 (146.0 gr.) - No problem getting 3350 fps. - Still need to do more testing on my end. - I'd stay away from the "Ball" Powder if at all possible due to the pressure spikes and pone to heat sensitivity.

Ca48,
I ran it last night on virgin brass with h50bmg and got a touch over 3250 with 300 otm, going to start playing with formed brass and see where we are at. Been trying to get barrel broke in and brass formed so we can really see what will happen.

I have a jug of rl50, may try it depending on the h50bmg load.

Will stay away from ball if at all possible. Stocked up on h50bmg last night. Great numbers on your build. I ran up to 14q on h50bmg last night and 143 of 20n29 ti see how it might work

IF your going to try to run V/V 20N29 you should very much consider warming your loaded rounds to a temp. of 120-140 deg. F. for at least 24 hours minimum. - This will help stabilize the load from a velocity variation stand-point. - I've used 20N29 in the 50 cal. (BMG & BMG Imp.) for years and those who don't warm it find erratic velocity which equates to poor accuracy especially at longer range. - I warm any rounds I use V/V 20N29 in a Black & Decker Food Warmer / Cooler unit. (Google it) - A 50 round MTM tray for 20 gauge shotgun shells holds the CheyTac Cases well & a 12 gauge tray holds 416 Barrett & 50 BMG. - Once the loaded rounds have been warmed (36-48 hours) the stability and accuracy are there.

Well, we got up over 3350 with fire formed brass. H50bmg @142 grains and with only now 50 rounds down the barrel. Thinking we may run it at 33 to 3325 with 140 grains as the 142 started to have heavier bolt lift

I sure didn't build an improved chey tac case to shoot lapua velocities.

I want to see what this will do, in the mean time I am finding accuracy and nodes. This was re zeroing this weekend. 1 low, come up 2 at 12 o clock and 1 at 2:30 this was around 3250fps would like to get it at 3300 or better, but I know accuracy kills20180804_111009.jpg

Will be running
14.05
141
141.5 grains of 50 bmg this weekend. Will be probably the last time shooting groups at closer range. Will post results

Looking like the 3250 fps area is a very easily obtainable node for this gun. Ran 3 groups different charge st 300 yards, this one was the best. Will get zeroed and go longer.Screenshot_20180811-092158_Range Buddy.jpg

Took this rifle out and took my 1st elk on a depredation hunt.

Nick,
I would say validated to just over 2k yards at 3300fps and putting 2 hits within 8"/.5moa of each other this was loaded for accuracy and velocity.

Jerky, steaks, roasts and burger

I'd like to know what it will do in E2K type shooting ? - 5 shots on a paper target (MR1) for group and score. (10 minute time limit with a 6 minute sighter period just prior to record group).

Hmmm that could be fun.
Just read the latest rules, I think dated 2/2018

What is respectable for hunting class?

Alex wheeler, can you say?
