Who here can help, a new guy...

Morning gents, I met a nice young guy, "Arthur" up at Ridgway rifle club this past w/e..He lives in the Buffalo, NY area..He is into that lever action Cowboy shooting..His rifle is a Big 45-70 Pretty expensive to shoot with...I could not do anything for him with my tools..&..I'm too far away from where he lives.. I live In CT...AnyWho..I told him I'd try to scrounge up some tools for him..All Hand powered types to start with..We have a really nice Rock Chucker press in the upper range house he can use to do his sizing..The rest of his tooling can be whatever he/we can put together to help him cobble together some cast bullet reloads..So I'm asking what can we do to help Art get started in reloading for his rifle...Thanks in Advance, from "Uncle" MikeinCt

First, I'd suggest a copy of The ABCs of Reloading. It will show not only how to reload, but explain components and show equipment needed. It's kinda hard to help a feller long distance, but reading will be a good start. I started reloading way pre-web and taught myself with books (lifelong machinist/mechanic so the process was easy to pick up for me.) and I read everything I could get my hands on. I think forums are only so-so as anybody can post a reply, no mater how questionable it is, just like youtube; anyone can be an expert. I'd suggest some reliable texts/manuals (ABCs, Lyman 50th, Hornady manual, etc.) and stick to the info in them and pay little attention to "helpful" folks...

The 45-70 is easy to load for. I have loaded for a baker's dozen starting in1972.
He can buy cast bullets off of gunbroker. Cast bullets need to be about .001 to .002 larger than the groove dia.
For light recoil use 300 grn flat nose.
If he is very careful 12 gr of Unique works great.
For the lever gun he needs to crimp to keep the bullets from pushing back into the cases in the magazine.

^^^If he's shootin cowboy action^^^^
Unique will work in a 45 long colt also.

I want to thank you all for your comments & offers...Art can read the comments he is having trouble signing on to post here...Keep em coming guys..He is a good guy & appreciates this community...MikeinCt

Trailboss WORKS,,can cheat

For Cowboy action shooting Trail Boss is great. There's several loading manuals on the web which you can purchase for a couple of bucks,,, dedicated to Cowboy Action shooting... I enjoy shooting the 45 LC in my Schofield pistols, looking for a Vaquero in Long Colt... seems they all come in some kind of silver finish... would like blue. with the birds head grips.. cool as sin..... There's some loads the duplicate the old Military pistols loads. Slow and big, at a 100 my guess you'd have 18 inch shooting high, thats of course shooting lead bullets, or as some report {heads}/// LOL.....
Remember: This is my rifle this is my gun, this is for killing, this is for fun... USMC>

I’m pretty sure I sent him a set of dies. I hope he found a good use for them and hope he’s OK.
