What is your dream scope for long range competition?

You should read the scope testing thread in its entirety and see how we been doing it for years and how a modern scope works
Link, please, to that scope testing thread.

I know how scopes work; they're virtually identical to camera lenses. Studying their patent documents reveals everything often using the optical formulas for their lenses. Only thing they don't reveal is optical and mechanical tolerances

Thanks.

Were those black spots on the grid bullet holes? Or plots where the scope under test pointed?

A pretty good test for line of sight clicks if scope aim point was used. If bullet holes, there's errors up to size of biggest shot group (worst accuracy or precision).

Nothing mentioned about zoom or reticle tracking.
They don't even shoot on a target. They just put both scopes on the aiming point. Then they fire the gun and put the scope back on the aiming point and see how much it moved. They plot that on paper. Matt

There's three different levels of check. One is zooming and one is changing the elevation and coming back. Matt

Therefore, the reference scope has to be perfect and all mechanical tolerances are zero. Right?

Excellent test if the reference scope's parts are fixed in place and not shifted during recoil. How's this verified?
