First time reloader!

Dippers are slower and less repeatable in charge weights dispensed.

Can you dip a hundred 50 grain charges, one every second, with a maximum 3/10ths grain spread?

Why not stand up and smile about being more knowledgeable? You probably knew about the details themselves alone. You just needed a little help putting them in the right order to make sense of the system

I've done that several hundred times with help from others.

OP-

The more one gets into this skill, the more there is to learn.

For me, life was simpler when I first started shooting and went to the range with a Henry in .22 and a box of Remington Thunderbolts (which I was assured by the vendor was a great ammo). My only worry the first two times out was loading the tube with rounds all pointed in the proper direction.

Now, I fill up a red wagon with what I need (need?) at the range, not to mention what my basement has been retasked for because of reloading. Silly me originally thought a press was for making European style coffee and a die was for changing the color of something.

You are amazing!

If I could just be HALF the man you are.............

all these guys are trying to help. i started at the bottom to thats why i posted about my powder dipper. a scale is very important though. without it you dont really know where you are at. if you could just weigh your charge youd know if you are within the recommended charge weights in the book. then you would know the loads okay for your heavier bullets. if you seat the bullet deep enough to feed through the magazine and the load is compressed thats ok. when you shoot the first couple youll find out if your running to high pressure then you can back off a little if you are. older redding beam scales are available on ebay pretty cheap. they take time to load with but they are accurate

Cool thanks for the feed back! I have actually pulled the bullets and powder and am going to get a scale so that I can get a better weight on the powder.

HAHA well I can see this hobby becoming a lot more than it is now!

here the thing I am messing myself up because I am using the lee chart and trying to compare it to the hornady book. the lee chart has 4064 in it but the hornady does not list 4064 for the weight of bullet

You obviously have a computer. You can go to Hodgdon.com and find info on any of their powders (which includes Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester.) Actually, I just checked - their data has 175 and 180, but no 178. Either should be close enough assuming you start near their minimum loads.

Not sure I can do this with any powder measure I've got, especially with 4064. I've got a Hornady, a few Lee Classics, a Harrel's, and one other I can't think of offhand. I usually end up using the Lee and manually adjusting the charge on a scale (but I usually try to keep charges within a half a tenth.)

In any case, slow is not too much of a drawback for a new reloader. Gives him more time to see a mistake.

I'm glad you pulled your rounds , the scale will make weighing your powder much safer . I would suggest you start at the lower end of the load book listings. IMR 4064 is my favorite powder under a Sierra 168gr. SMK . It does surprise me 2.800 will not load in your magazine . Some brass is thicker then others , you will see a difference in the hight of your powder charge especially with IMR 4064 . Remember to check your case length after sizing , trim an chamfer if needed. I keep mine at 2.010 . Check into the RCBS Precision Mic . For case headspace an ogive measurements , easy an accurate tool for your 308 . Glad your being safe , Great Hobby.

i don't know of any powder measuring method that can charge a case a second. i would say the fastest method i have is my harrell powder measure and second is my adams Autotrickler setup. no comparison in the accuracy of the two though.

The ones used at Lake City arsenal and Hornady's plant in mass production machines do that.

So can a loading tray holding 50 or 100 primed cases fed by most measures.

mass production?

i know very well that i couldn't charge 50 cases with my harrell in less than a minute. know i would make a mess trying.

i don't think the powder even falls out in less than a second. have to time that.
