Dented cases while resizing

Shooting freind came by with some .300WM cases that he resized with dents in shoulder and a crease type dent just below shoulder? He has used two different type dies and getting the same results. Both sets of dies have been cleaned and vents opened ? Not all brass is coming out with dents ,maybe one out of 5?

When you clean the necks with steel wool sometimes strands break loose and lay on the case. When you put them in the die they dent the case. Been There , Done that
The More Coarse the wool will produce a deeper dent.

There is something your friend needs ! Buy a old copy of Speer No. 8 or 10 reloading Manual . Try ebay etc.
The trouble shooting and guide to reloading is the best of the best with pictures.

I used to find then for Gifts to my friends that got into shooting.

You already have the reply above.

I think I have the book, thanks

Agreed. I never place lube on the shoulder or neck for this exact reason. Only light coating of Imperial wax the body.

I recently bought some Winchester brass that had strange issues (besides oblong flash holes). There were folds in the brass around the shoulder and some with strange cuts. I doubt it's the case but... have you seen the brass in question before and after? I didn't notice some of them until I was getting ready to load with powder and one I didn't notice until after I sat the bullet that there was a fine cut/split in the neck.

I would like to add that you should be cleaning your dies interior after every use...or at least after 200 cases put through them if you’re lazy. This will eliminate any chance that foreign matter may get in there and scratch up your die or cases.

I once helped a mate out with his components and die set in my press, the first case sized came out with about 6 or 7 dents around the shoulder, not huge single dents like you see from too much RCBS type lube, but little dents right around the circumference. I asked him when he cleaned the die last, and he said “NEVER”.
I had to soak the die in boiling water to loosen the years of crud. He thought the shoulder wrinkles to be NORMAL.
After thoroughly cleaning the die, no more wrinkles appeared.
I know my mate has not cleaned those dies since...

Cheers.

Yes, I have a few hundred 300WM cases from Winchester exactly as you describe, not all of them are affected though.
Most wrinkles are gone after firing, but if it’s pleated, as mine are, they only reduce in size and are always there.
Funny thing is I have never seen a case split on the pleat unless it was so bad that it was slit in the first place.

Cheers.
:)
