Latest Owner Feedback on NF Competition Fixed 42X Scope

I'm considering a NF Competition Fixed 42X scope for a new 6PPC LV rifle I'm getting. Weight is therefore a consideration. While there has been lots of discussion about the NF 15-55X Competition, which I own, very little feedback has been given about the fixed 42Xs and essentially nothing in the past 16 months. I'm curious how owners like their scopes. Have they experienced (or are at least suspicious of) any reticle shifts?

Other scopes I'm considering include the March 48X HM, the Valdada 36X, and perhaps the new Sightron Fixed 45X that is just being introduced. I have a March 10-60 HM and, like a lot of people, believe the glass is better in the NF Competition scopes. I have 2 Valdada 36Xs, which I consider to be excellent scopes, but I've been advised they're probably a little under-powdered for serious benchrest shooting. Eagerly awaiting feedback on the new Sightrons.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

I had one for a little while. It just didn't suit me. It was too bright if that makes sense. Not sure if that is the best way to express it
Also you have to get your eye just right couldn't follow up another shot as fast as I can with my March 40
I shoot 100-200

Kyle, I have been down the same path with my Stolle Panda / Terry Leonard 6PPC which came with a longer than typical barrel. I have also fitted a locally manufactured Barrel Tuner and the result is I am ever so slightly over weight for Heavy Class. I wanted the lightest Scope I could find so I ended up with a Leupold 40x45mm and very happy with it. I also have a March 36-55x52mm EP Zoom, looked at the Nightforce but it was still too heavy unless I reduced weight in the barrel..ie re-chamber or cut the muzzle and re-crown. It's a 24" barrel so I have options a little further down the track.

The Leupold came up at a very nice discount price so I went that way and are very happy. I have looked through a couple of Sightron Scopes and they seem a little fuzzy to me compared to what I have. Not sure of the others. Any Nightforce I have used/owned or even looked through I have always been impressed but these days I really do prefer the March which I have several. The Leupold was cheap in my view for what it delivers.

A few of the Aussie 500 Metre Fly Shooters are using the Variable Nightforce Competition 15-55x, most the Nightforce 12-42x and a few of us with March which the 8-80x56mm is my favourite.

Best bet I would say if you can is look through them if you can, use if you can and go with what suits you, especially the Reticle available.

My Light Class is a very old Remington XP-100 with a 36x40mm Leupold which the original owner (now deceased) won the majority of his "Hall Of Fame" points with and competed with Internationally. Days gone past.

I like mine so far, but I’ve only shot about 500 total rounds using it, so I can’t present a long term analysis.

Mine is bright which I like. Clicks are positive and repeatable. I’ve not tested it with a scope checker, but it seems to be holding zero and not wandering.

On the negative side, the eye box is on the small side. Eye position is pretty critical with this scope. Not a lot of wiggle room. At first, it was a big downside for me, but as time has gone by I find myself not thinking about it anymore as I’ve gotten used to the scope.

Hope this helps.

I have two of the NF Comp 42X Scopes on my Comp 100/200 rifles and like them a lot.
Very clear and bright (Don't know how a scope could be too bright)
I haven't found that eye position is critical in my case
I like the small dot as I always had 1/16th dots in all my 100/200 comp scopes. I previously had the Leupold 45x and the old March 40X and the NF42X is as good as these.

I have not suspected any point of shift in the reticle system. I have probably fired a couple of thousand rounds with these scopes.

I have not used the new March HM but have heard it is very good. It wasn't available when I changed mine to NF.

If you look at the SS Equipment list their are a few of the NF scopes being used.

Hope that helps

Michael

Hey, Kyle. Did you receive that PM I sent when you first started the thread? Just wondering if it went through

I see NIghtforce scope shooter banging on their turrets after making a correction. They just don't seem to trust their scopes. I don't see this with March shooters. I have had a Sightron no complaints and a Nightforce, maybe not my best purchase. I personally shoot a S&B 12x50, it's expensive and it's heavy but I trust it.

Might try this same question on BR Central. There are a lot of SR shooters over there. These scopes are showing up with regularity on equipment lists if that means anything to you.

I have used a Nightforce fixed 42X on my LV 6ppc for a year now. It is very clear and adjustments are positive and reliable. I have used Weavers Leupolds Valdadas and Marchs. When I need to buy another scope it will be a Nightforce.

When I dabbled in short range, I went with the NF 42x. I use NF exclusively for my other rifles, so it was an easy choice.

Admittedly having little experience otherwise in this cateogry, I was pleased with the performance of the scope. I heard some chatter about shooters wishing for more magnification, but it was easy to determine that it was not a limiting factor of my shooting.

I happily recommend it.

I have been using the 42 comp now for about a year now and consider it to be one of the best short range scopes on the market. I also like the march 48 hm. More and more benchrest shooters have been switching to Nightforce over the last few years Because of the clarity and dependability of thes scopes. At the cactus classic wayne Campbell used One to win the 2 gun. And tony boyer also used one to win the Super shoot. That purdy much tells you about the scope and how many of the top benchrest shooters trust them . I can put any scope I want on my benchguns Because when it comes to dependability I spare no expenses. Right now my bench gun carries the Nightforce 42

I wil tell the best shooting scope I have is the new March HM48 power it moves good and holds point of aim and it is clear and bright. My range is in the woods and I could never shoot in the morning till I used the scope. A lot of good variables were too dark to shoot in the morning, so the March HM48 is great for light and it can easily see 6mm holes at 400 yds in modern mirage.... and it has 60 min. of elevation.... parallax is great also.... jim

Hey, Micmac. Just got an s111 45x in this morning. Ckd out perfect on one of Alloy Targets checkers. Good solid clicks, very light weight. Looks okay optically, but will be doing comparisons against a 48x HM later this evening when mirage is down enough to see anything. First impression is good--- seems to be a substantial improvement over their S111 variables. We'll see?

I like the nf but use the valdada36 on all my ppc guns that i use in a match. Im sure its just me but i cant get right with the fixed nf and im a die hard nf guy. You cant beat the valdada though- we’ll see if the nf stands up to a few more years.

Its a very honest scope at great price , am not expecting it be beat scopes twice the price on glass ,but do expect it to be mechanicaly sound.

Scope basicaly killed Leupold competiiton series for good.Weavers XR line it it ever gets past its issues will also have hard time competing with it.

Only real thing i would like to see is european stye diopter but that would add both cost and weight.
