NF fixed competition

Equipment Changes, I have this hair brained idea of getting rid of my 15-55x Competition 2013 model for the Fixed 42x, Does this make sense to anyone?

I am very curious why NF didn't stick with the 52obj on the fixed models

I believe it had to do with keeping them light for the 10 1/2 pound class. If,I was shooting long range I would keep the 15x55. Sometimes you need to crank down to 25 to handle the mirage. I also like the bigger objective. Matt

Weight I can understand although you have to wonder how much was saved with objective size. As for the 55 I had the same thoughts, the whole what if list going on in my head but ... I have yet to dial the scope down. So many chioces, these scope companies need to calm themselves

As for dialing down, I believe that depends on where and when you shoot. I know here it can get so bad you can't tell when you have the parallax out. Then I turn down till it almost disappears. Sometimes that is as low as 20x. I know I looked at the NXS weights and there was a difference between the 50 and 56mm. I can't remember the exact numbers but it was more then I thought. I believe they really released it for the point blank shooters. Matt

I looked thru one at the super shoot nightforce gave a couple away and had one setup on a tripod.
The optics were incredible. It was brighter and a little clearer than my March 40x
I don't know how they are performing as far as holding poi.
The mechanism for holding the internal tube in place is different than the 12-42.
The 42 does not have the coil spring assemble coming out of the scope. I asked the guy what the design was. He said it had titanium leaf spring. I believe they had to do something other than the coil spring due to weight as well

The above posters are correct, the fixed 42x was for Rimfire and Short Range BR shooters to make weight easier. The smaller objective combined with the fixed magnification saves a lot of weight.

I have been using two of the new fixed 42x scopes all season. They have been great. No POI shift, and all the other stuff that makes NF glass great, and did I mention NO poi shift.

That said, if your 2013 is working...

Well put it this way. If NF wanted to build a fixed power scope with a 52mm obj lens, they could of done it and kept the weight the same. March did it. I have 2 fixed March scopes and I just got my new NF 42 yesterday and the NF weight was 21.0 oz even, both Marchs weighed 20.9. I weighed all the scopes at my local post office and weighed them on my scale and all 3 weights were exactly the same. It's obvious that NF's aluminum tube must be a hair thicker than March's tube. Another thing that NF in my opinion should of done like March was to offer a benchrest model competition scope in both 15-55 and 42, and a tactical model with the tactical knobs and zero stop. Dean Breeden and I were discussing that yesterday and we both agreed that tactical knobs and zero stop isn't necessary for short range competition benchrest shooting.

Valid point, same point my buddies keep telling me. The 2013 is working great its rock solid for target use. This is what happens when the season draws to an end, I use the down time to tweek things. Streamline my set up. Admittedly over think things sometimes.

Just something I was kicking around.

Im still trying to decide what scope to pickup for PRS shoots. Somthing I'd like to get into. ATACR vs VortexHD. Nightforce being my first pick based on how solid the Competiton has been for me.

Ya if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have a 2013 model on my dedicated 200-300 yard rifle and it works flawlessly. Dean has 2 2013 models and he sent both of them back to NF to have the reticles changed to a .925 dot. I don't like my 1/8 dot, but spending 450 bucks to have the reticle changed is way too steep in my opinion. March only charges $325.00 to do the same.

I priced out upgrades in the past, it's more cost effective to sell the scope and buy what you want. Although the 2013 offers move elevation in which case if you need the the elevation then a reticle change makes sense.

If they offered reticle upgrades that are found on other models like the BR I can see that as somthing one would consider, but last time I checked they don't do that.
