Rem 700 bolt binding

I have a Remington 700 action that I purchased a PTG bolt for
and it seems to bind while feeding.
It seems that pressure on the bolt handle puts lateral pressure
on it and it binds up. if I push on the back of the bolt with my thumb
it goes fine. If I use a factory bolt so sloppy there is no issue.

Is there a fix for this other than turning the bolt down a touch.
I have polished the race way. Should I try polishing the bolt?

Thanks for the help

Two things
1. modify how you push the bolt. By that I mean don't palm it. That pushes it sideways. Catch it with the base of your thumb below the bolt knob. That gets you lined up better.
2. just shoot it. It will get slicker

Making the bolt smaller will exaggerate the problem. That will let you push it further sideways.

What diameter bolt did you buy? I ream the boltway slightly when installing a PTG bolt to get about .003 clearance.

However, what you are describing sounds light it is likely a tight place in the lug raceways. I often have to lap them a little with 600 grid.

Still, they almost always run smoother when you run a reamer through and take off all the high spots.

i assume this is for an un-barreled action. you do know you can't drop in a new bolt in a barreled action, right?

Another trick, Spray Silicon lube on the bolt and raceways. Works until the action smooths out. I'd be very careful and not get it in the chamber or down the barrel though.

I figured it will break in. Thank you for the response

Yes the bolt is .003 smaller than the raceway .710 reamer from Manson.
than I polished the raceway to remove any reamer marks.
yeah I purchased a bare stainless Remington action trued it and
installed a mcgowen barrel.
My first Remington usually do Savage builds for people, but sooner or later
ya gotta do a Rem 700 LOL

Thanks for the input Jerry

Aha! So you're on top of this. I would say that since you did the reaming, the most likely cause is a tight place in the lug raceway. I've fitted a half dozen PTG bolts in the last few months and about half had a tight fit in the lug raceway that loosed right up with 600 grid lapping compound. You can probably see where it is rubbing on the lug.

.003 is tight but that's what I use with no problem.

The other possibility is that you have a very slight bend in your reaming job caused by loose bushings. Not likely if you did a good job selecting your bushings.

I use tapered bushings so it stays concentric. I know they tell you to use one on the trigger side
but I use 2, the one in the front face the narrow to the muzzle and let it push thru the to the back and
then I pull it.
I think the next one I purchase I will order at .004 under.

so you place lapping compound on the lugs or in the raceway?

Indicate the top & bottom surfaces of the bolt lugs to the bolt body diameter & you will find the cause of your binding.

Dan,

are you saying blue it to see where it is rubbing?
I'm not good with technical terms.

Also another quick question for you.
could you PM me and let me know how to get a bolt and handle
to you so you could tig it for me.

Thanks

Yes, it was.
Funny you ask they actually had the hole for the ejector pin to big and
I had to send it back for a custom pin.
Not funny at all , it's part of "walking the line " when building a rifle . Check everything, write it down , check again , verify .

My target rifle is .0015 under.Took A little break in, slick now. The anti bind/tilt slot can be a source of problems on tight tolerences.
