Bolt Binding Question

I had a 280 AI built a couple of years ago on an early 60s model Rem 700 Action. The factory bolt I felt had some slop in it, so I purchased a PTG 1 piece to replace it. After the build is complete and now cerakoted, the bolt binds on the ejection stroke, and not so much the forward stroke of the bolt. It also has worn some of the cerakote off on the high spots on the spiral fluted bolt. The original bolt was .697" with cerakote, and I was advised to order the new bolt as .698".

Any clues as to what the cause might be? Also could it be that the smith applied the cerakote too thick, since he did use the air dry cerakote? I am thinking about lapping the bolt a touch, then having it DLC coated, do you all think that would help?

Keep on working it. You dont want to get a heat treated bolt coated with a finish that requires more than 400deg or so to apply. You could send it out to get blued or parkerized and get the thick cerakote off of it

You pretty much answered your own question. It's the cerakote that adds to the diameter. Like mentioned...work it. If it was me, I'd keep the cerakote off the diameter and leave it in the flute. Just my opinion. Or strip it and get it melonited.

It’s a McMillan with AL pillars.

Here are some pics of the west on my bolt. It’s seems to be smoothing out. It appears that the smith coated the inside of the boltways as well.

Just keep cycling it and you will be fine. Some gun oil on the peaks of the bolt body would not hurt as well. Just a light coat helps quite a bit.

get some hobo oil and it'll be like new
