Question about ordering a custome chamber reamer

Hi all, how are you?
I am new here and love how well informed and knowledgeable people on here are and so willing to help out.

so I have submitted specs to one of the reputable reamer companies and had a reply with a print of the reamer I requested.
But I noticed that some specs were changed.

my request was for a .284 Winchester match reamer.
I requested the min chamber length to be 2.165" and the shoulder length to be .281"

those two measurement were changed to 2.175" and .291"

I asked why and they replied to allow more room and allow the brass to stretch.

now this company always seems to come up as top 5 when I search reviews on reamers and I am NOT complaining.
I am just curious as to the advantages of allowing room for the brass to stretch?

I use lapua brass 6.5-284 sized up to 7mm and for some reason it seems I never have to trim that stuff, its always below trim requirements.

I shoot Berger Hybrid targets or Lapua Scenar L

so back to the reamer...is there an advantage for the extra room or should I ask that the specs I requested be done

BTW they were very nice and great communication. by no means where they pushing this. they were suggesting and sent the print for review and changes if I wanted any.

just looking for opinions before I order .

hope I posted in the right area

It is my belief that somehow there was a mis-communication as "room for the brass to stretch" as in length is completely stupid and in any case this isn't a "reamer" function.....it's a headspace setting and Headspace is a gunsmith function. I'd just ignore this difference and make my decision based on other factors.

Chamber length could be also looked at like neck length and it is a function of the reamer. By shortening the chamber length to 2.165 you will need to keep cases trimmed to 2.155 or shorter. 2.175 will not hurt a thing and you dont want to crowd the end of the chamber. I do not shorten case lengths on my reamers anymore. I dont know exactly what your calling shoulder length, but that is set but the gunsmith if I am thinking what you are.

al may know a little about reamers and such, but he is a cement worker by trade.
let me ask you an AL question.
do you have a sizing die that matches the numbers on your reamer ?
( see al you thought i was not listening)

All of my dies are specifically matched to my reamers.

I've had 3 different chamberings done where I ordered the chambering reamer from the die (in two cases I just had the sizing die company send the resizer directly to the reamer maker)

But mostly I order two reamers, one for the die and one for the sizer.

Except for 6BR where I have 4 differently sized reamers .002 apart, and 300WSM where I have 4 differently sized with the smallest one being built from a Redding die.

AND..... to answer your question specifically the way it was worded, yes, I do have 3 different "resizers" two of them with bushings and one with bushings and micrometer top which "match the numbers on my reamer"..... because they were CUT WITH the chambering reamer.

They are of course completely useless as such, (they were built as the famous "bump dies").....BUT........

:)

They were all made back when I was spending my money based on others' opinions of what to do and how to do it...... I've a 'YUGE graveyard full of other people's ideas.... and in this case I've made use of these expensive dies because I bought a lathe and bought chambering reamers made over-sized to FIT these dies and have made lemonade.

$5000.00/glass lemonade but DRINKABLE!!

Got them dies workin' now....

and that makes me THE WINNER!!!

My sizing die doesn't match. I use the Forster FL die.
I FL size every reload.
You also don't expect to load your cases 50 times.....you probably throw them away at 5 reloads in the interest of safety.

I don't even consider some cases to be fully seasoned or match-ready at 5 firings. PPC/BR stuff, yes, even 2 firings is sometimes enough but big long cases can take 4-5

I'm on fire # 4
Annealed. The brass shows zero signs of wear. Never needed trimming.
U think I should chuck It???

NO..... don't even think of chucking it :) it sounds as if you've a fine fit! If you're on firing #4 with no trimming and no wear then ROCK ON!! Sounds like you've lucked into a good fit.

Oh thought so...reason why I asked for specific specs on reamer.
I requested the same specs as the reamer used to chamber my current rifle.

Thanks everyone..some super great info on here!!
