Barrel without Crown

Is it possible to shorten a barrel and not recrown it and expect any kind of accuracy? I have a couple Savage barrels I would like to cut to 14" four my Striker pistol. I have a Thompson Contender factory barrel that appears to be cut square and shoots very well.

Cut square as with a hacksaw? Or cut square as in a lathe but with no recess/slope/chamfer?

For something like that get you a piloted cutter from ptg. (Ducks back in the corner running from the no crowning tool people)

cut it off on the bandsaw, strike it off on the grinder, spin it up on the belt sander to finish

i actually cut a barrel off with a hacksaw and cleaned it up with a file. it was still a minute shooter. (rifle) cut it a little long and try it you can always then crown it some other way if it dont work.

I'll go to the corner too...a round head screw or carriage bolt chucked up in a drill with lapping compound on the head can make a decent crown, prob not match worthy but the animals you shoot with it won't know the difference

Hell. if you're that way inclined, there are quite a few inside chamfering tools that would do as well.

There was a guy in the "Daily Bulletin" on here that did some fine shooting with a flat muzzle. I believe he was from California. I can't remember enough details to find the article.

The recess on crowns is primarily to protect the rifling edges by having them set back from the edge. As Sawcarver said, clean up the edges by polishing with a brass screw head and lapping compound and you should be good to go. My gunsmith is a former Marine armorer. When he was in Libya, field expedient crown work was done with a round grindstone chucked into a drill.

About 20 years back a well know shooting personality experimented with velocity and accuracy variation with a Ruger 10-22. He cut an inch off the barrel and retested multiple times. After 5 or 6 in., he got tired of removing the barrel for lathe recrowning and started cutting it off square with a hacksaw and deburring with a cartridge case deburring tool. He found no noticeable effect on accuracy and concluded that a high precision crown was not really necessary at least for 22LR. Since the bullets are heeled you would think they would be sensitive to a bad crown. It was a remarkable demonstration that perfect crowning was more cosmetic than utilitarian in his experiment.

Im not sure if i would go that far- on a br quality rifle the crown DOES make a difference you can see. On a hunting gun as long as its damage free its good to go

When I bought my lathe my dads old 22 with the hacksawed off crooked to boot .barrel was one of my first projects. Made no discernable difference. It does look nicer now though!!

What do you mean by "crown".

Every barrel has a crown.

Some crowns are better than others.

Ok , here's a very inexpensive muzzle crowning tool that I've been keeping to myself . When I started , early 80 , I was dirt poor . I had Lee reloading tools and case cutters , see where I'm going ? The case cutter , with the pilot ( early ones were aluminum) cut the steel like , well almost butter . I did this inverted , butt up so chips would NOT fall in the barrel . For $7-$8 it'll work and look great .
Even with a small machine shop , I still take one in my range box . Just in case someone needs a fresh up at the range . I now use the next size up steel pilot and turn them to fit the barrel I'm working on .

I bet you can get away with a pretty rough crown as long as it doesn't gouge the bullets and your bullets are top shelf.

I lopped 4" off a Savage LRH in 6.5 Creedmoor, cleaned it up with a flat file and lightly hit the muzzle with a cone shaped stone in a Dewalt drill.

3 shots touching and not just barely.

Yeahhh? Well I got up at midnight, 2 hours before I'd went to bed. Ate a bowl of cold gravel, LICKED t'road clean wit' tongue......BENT off t'barrel o' my 6.5x47L by wedgin' it in t'rocks and POOFED 5rds down wit' mouf.....

ALL toochin'......
